The CT Public Health Fellowship Program offers experiential learning opportunities with public health agencies for students across Connecticut. "Our team at DataHaven investigates data coming in from national and statewide sources on a daily basis, and we also engage Connecticut resident in our own interviews and surveys, which are always fascinating." says Mark Abraham, a preceptor for the program at DataHaven. AHEC Pathway Programs open doors for all students to pursue careers in primary and preventive healthcare. In 2023-2024, over 270,000 students were introduced to health careers, with 21% of all participants coming from disadvantaged backgrounds and 23% from rural areas. These programs help increase diversity and distribution of healthcare professionals in rural and medically underserved communities. From high school to healthcare! ? In 2024 we announced a first-of-its kind initiative that pairs public education systems and hospitals to create innovative high schools. ? Immediately upon graduation, students can enter healthcare jobs within the partner healthcare system or choose to advance their career with further education. ? The first year of the UGA College of Public Health's Online Master of Public Health (MPH) program brought together students from diverse backgrounds, all driven by a shared goal: improving the health of their communities. Launched in August 2023, the inaugural cohort of 21 students includes both public health professionals expanding their expertise and individuals pivoting to new careers. “Our students come from a diversity of professional and personal backgrounds, and our program will help them hone their own experiences and interests to solidify professional pathways in public health,” said Melissa Howard, the College’s Director of Online Learning and Professional Practice. Howard emphasized the program’s adaptive design, adding, “We aim to provide an inclusive learning environment that accommodates the diverse needs of our students. Fressia Rivas and Heather McCallum are two St. Joseph's care partners who recently shared their stories with students from Western University School of Health Studies. “Hearing these lived experiences can shape their future approach to care,” says care partnership consultant Heyli Dayaratna. The fourth-year undergraduates are taking a course that includes a practicum placement at Parkwood Institute. At a seminar with St. Joseph's Care Partnership Office, the students spoke with care partners and learned the importance of empathy in patient care. “It was surprising to see how much common ground there was between each story, even though the stories themselves were so different,” student Julia Parybak says. This is invaluable. It's tough when you have an idea of the career path you want to follow, but there isn't a lot of support for it. Luckily, healthcare is universal so it's great to see a program dedicated to helping students get started.
