Micro-Segmentation and Multi-Tenancy: The Brown M&Ms of Platform Engineering ???? Key Innovations: ??- **Micro-segmentation:** Enhances network security by dividing larger networks into smaller segments. ??- **Multi-tenancy:** Allows multiple workloads to share infrastructure securely. ??- **Automation:** Utilizes GitOps and Policy as Code for streamlined operational processes. ???? Notable Features: ??- **Namespaces-as-a-Service:** Facilitates isolation for different teams using shared clusters. ??- **Policy Automation:** Tools like Cilium and Kerno manage network policy to ensure security and compliance. ??- **Standardization:** Reduces cognitive load for developers by implementing common practices across teams. ????? Perfect for: ??- Platform engineers seeking to implement robust security in Kubernetes environments. ??- Enterprises looking to balance multi-tenancy with performance and cost efficiency. ??- DevOps teams needing a structured approach to application development and deployment. ???? Impact: ??- Improved application security through micro-segmentation. ??- Enhanced operational efficiency and reduced cognitive load on development teams. ??- Greater predictability in cost and resource management through standardization. ???? Preview of the Talk: ??In this insightful session, Jim Bugwadia and Rachael Wonnacott explore the pressing need for micro-segmentation and multi-tenancy in platform engineering. Using the metaphor of Van Halen's infamous 'no brown M&Ms' clause, they underline the importance of meticulous detail in managing shared infrastructure. The speakers present various approaches to secure Kubernetes deployments, showcasing real-world examples, and demonstrating how automation reduces cognitive load for app developers. Key insights into tools like Cilium and Kerno reveal how organizations can improve both security and efficiency within their cloud environments. ??Watch the full session here: https://lnkd.in/gp3i3UC2 #kubeconNA

Our paper titled "Revealing the Threat Landscape of Intent-based Management in O-RAN" is now published Filippo Rebecchi , Daniel Cho , Henrik Forssell , Jonathan Olsson Automation has become one key pillar in managing and orchestrating complex networks. Most of the automation today is achieved through programmatically defined policies. One of the most promising ways to achieve a truly autonomous network and service management framework vision is through intents. Intents provides the system with a formal specification of all expectations, requirements, goals, and constraints that should be met without specifying how to achieve them. It follows that an intent-based architecture introduces new functional assets, increasing the attack surface, possibly providing an adversary with additional entry-points with the potential to disrupt network operations, steal Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), intercept sensitive data, and move laterally to other management domains. In this paper we discuss the potential security implication of an Intent-based Management (IbM) system based on Open RAN (O-RAN) architecture and disclose the potential threat landscape that is inherent to such architecture, detailing countermeasures and recommending implementation guidelines. This analysis is relevant in supporting future implementations and standardization of intent-based management capabilities in O-RAN.

"I like your system reliability and architecture content but do you have to write all those posts about organizations and growth?" I wish I didn't have to but systems are designed, maintained, and evolved by people. It's na?ve to think that you can "fix" system reliability at the machine level without addressing the human factor. Organization architecture impacts system reliability: https://lnkd.in/dUQHBMb5 Beside, a lot of systems thinking applies to both computer systems and human systems. Most of the learnings from one applies to the other. The good news is that Alex Ewerl?f Notes is published in multiple sections and you can turn off the sections that don't suit your taste. https://lnkd.in/d2pt2xr5

We often adapt and apply institutional analysis to understand better the ‘functional architecture’ of client projects, which enables us to provide appropriate systems engineering solutions for the diverse environments our clients create and exist within. In this article, we turn the microscope around. Researcher Jeff Emmett explores institutional analysis via organizational cybernetics, systems thinking heuristics, and viable systems models as they inform and align with BlockScience's functional architecture. These tools and techniques help to improve feedback loops and increase clarity about interdependent decision contexts, enabling mutual accountability and the evolution of organizations and their collective steering processes. https://lnkd.in/gRPqzUFt #cybernetics #systemsthinking #institutionalanalysis

?? Shallow Integration : A Simple but Effective Approach ?? When integrating platforms, shallow integration offers a practical way to connect systems without overcomplicating the architecture. It’s all about enabling basic communication and data exchange while keeping systems loosely coupled. ?? Key Benefits of Shallow Integration: - Great for #legacy systems and modular upgrades - Faster implementation for quick results - Minimal disruption to existing systems - Easier maintenance with less complexity While it may not provide deep functionality, shallow integration is ideal for projects where speed and flexibility are critical! #PlatformIntegration #SystemsEngineering #IntegrationStrategy #Technology #EngineeringSolutions #Innovation

High Cardinality metrics pose challenges due to their operational cost. However, in cloud-native and distributed systems, they offer valuable insights. Rather than discarding them, it is essential to manage them by implementing strategies like pre-aggregation and flow control to manage their impact effectively. I will be speaking on "Blessings of High Cardinality" at the Conf42 #Observability conference https://lnkd.in/d_RPXP8T Last9 Inc #HighCardinality #Metrics Don't know what is high cardinality? "Resource management is crucial for scaling digital twin representations in service architectures. Proper resource cleanup ensures system stability during scaling up and down. Rigorous resource management prevents resource exhaustion and orphaned resources consuming capacity. The Substrates API’s approach to resource management ensures that resources are acquired and released during scaling operations. This is important in environments with rapidly fluctuating circuit numbers. The Substrates approach allows developers to focus on modeling while the underlying resource lifecycle is handled automatically, enabling reliable scaling without resource degradation." Coming to the end of the series on the Substrates API. There are just a few concepts left to cover and then a wrap-up before publishing it. #observabilityX #telemetry #monitoring #observability #o11y
