I'm happy to share our recently published research paper which was the result of a collaborative work with Audrey Antonio, Kathrine Marie J?rgensen, Maja Fartek and Ana ?imuni? (who wonderfully supervised all of us). This paper gathers data from 4 European countries: Italy, Denmark, Croatia and Portugal. We aimed to explore the associations between the perceptions of social acceptance of singlehood, singles-friendly work cultures (SFWC), and work-life balance (WLB) during the COVID pandemic. What we learned: ??Single people without children perceived discriminations during the pandemic, such as being expected to pick up extra shifts or be more flexible in planning their private schedules. ?? Singlehood acceptance and WLB were higher, and work cultures were more single-friendly in countries with more egalitarian values, starting with Denmark ? Croatia ? Portugal ? Italy. With this study, we expect to bring awareness to singles’ work-life issues when thinking about organizational benefits and policies?? More equitable and inclusive work cultures (and thus single-friendly), which are sensible to everyone's non-work needs, are key to promote work-life balance! https://lnkd.in/dDD8zd3W

My belated contribution to 20th October - the National Women's Day of Vietnam: What does it mean to be a working mom? I’m just back from a five-day work trip: nearly 18,000 steps and over 30 miles traveled per day, working from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m., followed by a full day just to recover. And, believe it or not, this was an “easy” trip. I’ve had jobs where I fainted from the heat or went days on end with hardly any sleep. For years, I didn’t know how to rest. Burnout was practically a constant companion. Motivation came and went, but I never stopped working. I’ve always loved my job—and honestly, I’ve loved the act of working itself. I’ve been in motion since my third year of university. After this last trip, as I eased into a hot bath followed by a full-body massage, a question bubbled up: How can I be a mother if I continue doing what I love? And in the service industry, where clients expect nothing less than our best, maintaining my well-being has become even more crucial. It’s one thing to be the best for your clients—but how do you also show up as the best for your family and, somewhere in between, the best for yourself? I look around and see women chasing careers while raising children. It seems natural. Yet society has this strange, unspoken expectation: work like you don’t have kids, and raise kids like you don’t have work. Is that really the deal? Is there no “in-between” where both are possible—where we can do what we love without guilt, without the feeling that we’re supposed to be doing something else? I’m still figuring it out. Maybe there isn’t one answer for all of us. But I’d love to hear your thoughts. How do you balance the things that drive you with the responsibilities you hold dear? What chaos??? ????♀? My client honestly thought that her life was running in utter chaos until we deconstructed her morning and her evening routines and took a detailed look at where she thought the chaos was. And we found out that she was mostly worried about whether she was doing enough, whether her kids were happy and all kinds of other "perfect world" scenarios that were going through her head. Most working mothers know how they want things to work in their life with family, it's just laying down that foundation and sticking to it that is the challenge. I work a lot with mindset and self-appreciation, because it's something I struggled with, even when I wasn't working. Most women know that they are enough, our kids love us unconditionally, it's acknowledging this and the best time to do this is particularly on a down day! Family life should not be chaotic. If it's chaotic as a working mother, it was probably chaotic before going back to work and possibly even when they were single! The debrief time in the evening with the whole family is so valuable and effective. It's good to talk about your highlight of the day, what you learned and what didn't go so well and just talk. You can do this with kids as young as 4 and 5, they love being heard just as much as adults. It's crucial that access to treatment and support systems are equitable, especially in low- and middle-income countries where resources may be scarce. ??
