Today, we honor Juneteenth and recognize the strength and resilience of our ancestors who paved the way for our freedom. Holidays like Juneteenth are essential for Black organizations like NBMBAA as they remind us of our history, culture, and the ongoing fight for equality and justice. Did you know? Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It’s a celebration of freedom, culture, and progress. Let’s continue to uplift and empower our community, keeping their legacy alive. ?????? Here’s a list of ways to celebrate Juneteenth: 1. **Support Black-Owned Businesses**: Show your support by shopping at Black-owned businesses, dining at Black-owned restaurants, and using services provided by Black entrepreneurs. 2. **Attend Juneteenth Events**: Participate in local Juneteenth celebrations, parades, festivals, and educational events. These gatherings often include music, food, and cultural performances. 3. **Learn and Educate**: Take the time to learn more about the history of Juneteenth and the significance of the day. Share this knowledge with friends and family through discussions, book clubs, or social media. 4. **Volunteer and Donate**: Volunteer your time or donate to organizations that support the Black community, such as educational programs, social justice initiatives, and local charities. 5. **Celebrate with Family and Friends**: Host a gathering with loved ones to celebrate Juneteenth. How will Kamala Harris becoming President of the United States affect your life? My daughters are 10 and 7 and don't really care for politics at the moment. They don't realise that their potential futures are in debate at the moment as the world prepares for the unimaginable- A Black female USA President of South Asian descent. The path women like Kamala Harris are paving is crucial for the future of ALL female leaders in ALL circumstances. How can we normalise Female Leaders if we don't have Female Leaders in Top Global positions? How will Kamala Harris becoming President of the USA affect my life? It will give me hope and faith to continue raising my girls to believe that they CAN! It will inspire me to keep listening to my intuition and trusting my feminity to guide others to do the same. Did you know that Canada has committed to addressing the needs of Black communities across the country by endorsing the United Nations Decade of Black people/people of African descent? The Decade was initially declared by the UN General Assembly in 2015, recognizing the promotion and protection of human rights for people of African descent. Two weeks ago, the Prime Minister's Office announced an extension of the Decade in Canada until 2028. Canada's Action Plan Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative includes several initiatives that aim to improve social and economic outcomes for Black communities. These initiatives include a $200 million fund for Black-led, Black-focused, and Black-serving charities and non-profits, a $200 million Black-led philanthropic endowment fund, a $265 million Black Entrepreneurship Program, and a $10 million Mental Health of Black Canadians Fund. To celebrate the history, culture, accomplishments, contributions, and future of Black Canadians and their communities, the Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Program (MARP) will include a new priority in its Events component for 2024. Canada's commitment to the Decade is a significant step towards recognizing and addressing the needs of Black communities across the country. Today is Juneteenth, a federal holiday and a day of great significance in the U.S. On June 19, 1865, an order was issued in Galveston, Texas, that ended slavery. Juneteenth is a symbol of liberation, resilience, and movement towards equality. Today is also a time to celebrate and honor African American achievements and culture. If you are looking for meaningful ways to observe Juneteenth, our Black Colleague Resource Group at BPM LLP shared these suggestions with our firm, and I am happy to share them with you: -Shop at Black-owned businesses: Make a conscious effort to support Black-owned businesses in your community or online. -Donate to nonprofits: Consider donating to organizations that advance racial justice and promote equity. -Support Black artists, authors, and musicians: Explore the works of Black creatives. We are still fighting for freedom, regardless of being “given” a day. Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a significant day in American history marking the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now free. This was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Recognizing Juneteenth is more than just acknowledging a date; it’s about honoring the struggles and achievements of Black Americans, reflecting on our history, and committing to actions that promote equality and justice. As businesses and individuals, we have the power and responsibility to show up for Black communities. One impactful way to do this is by supporting nonprofits that are dedicated to expanding their reach and helping those who are disenfranchised. Organizations like Fearless Fund, Colorful Connections, and more are on the front lines, working tirelessly to create opportunities and provide resources to those in need. By donating to these nonprofits, we can help amplify their efforts in areas such as education, economic empowerment, health care, and criminal justice reform. Your support can make a real difference in building a more equitable society. Let’s use this Juneteenth to not only celebrate but also to take meaningful action. It’s Black Philanthropy Month. I don’t usually focus on race, as I believe that what’s meant for you will come to you. However, it’s undeniable that Black nonprofits are significantly underfunded. This issue becomes even more pronounced when working in Black countries with histories of instability—comparing aid to Ukraine versus Haiti is a prime example. One major reason for this underfunding is the lack of access to nonprofit management and fundraising education for Black founders and executive directors. Research indicates that Black-led nonprofits receive less funding than their White-led counterparts, often due to systemic biases and limited networks that facilitate large donations. The drive to address the inequities we witness or have experienced ourselves is usually the noble force behind Black founders and NPO executives. This contrasts with White counterparts who often major in nonprofit management and fundraising at higher rates and from prestigious institutions and approach problem solving as a job. Of course there are benefits and drawbacks to both. After six years, I’m grateful for the learn-as-you-go approach my purpose has imposed on me. Honestly, I don’t think any degree can fully prepare someone to work in Cité-Soleil. However, I’m now ready to pair my field experience with academic knowledge. One of my goals is to attend Harvard’s nonprofit management certification courses by 2026, should I find a grant ????. The other is to secure much larger operational grants to ensure that I can hire people smarter than me to scale up the work. —————————- I’d like to thank everyone who has donated financially or in-kind to our mission in Haiti, especially when the going gets tough. i recognize that CHFF is small and faces more challenges than anything in Port-au-Prince’s unstable sociopolitical climate.
