iPhone Users Get Satellite Messaging Boost as Apple Joins T-Mobile and SpaceX Beta Apple has rolled out an update enabling T-Mobile customers to send text messages even when they’re in areas with no traditional cellular coverage. The new feature, part of the iOS 18.3 update, supports T-Mobile and SpaceX’s direct-to-cell satellite service, which is currently undergoing beta testing. This new functionality brings Apple one step closer to bridging the connectivity gap in remote and rural areas.

# # # dtk v1.2 just released! # # # The diagport toolkit (dtk) Windows application is a tool communicating with Qualcomm-based smartphones and CPE modems, allowing to capture raw 2G/3G/4G/5G radio frames. The tool uses the Qualcomm diagnostic protocol, also called QCDM (Qualcomm Diagnostic Monitor) to communicate with the device. It allows us to generate packets captures in PCAP file format using either an Android smartphone or a modem. Additionally, it is capable of decoding 5G frames and create decoded PCAPNG files can be used and interpreted by any network protocol analyzer application which handles this type of file format. I purchased an Apple Vision Pro https://lnkd.in/etQSndZs on Friday. I was very intrigued by the technology and interested to see how it would play out. In the few days I have had it, I will share my initial impressions of it. First - it's EXPENSIVE! Over $4k out the door for a base model, carrying case and tax. It obviously needs to come way down before mass adoption. Second - it is relatively heavy, and uncomfortable to wear for extended periods of time. The weight is so front biased that it really does give you a headache after a few minutes. However....the tech is insane. The things that had the real wow factor included viewing panoramic photos I had taken, or the demos of watching live sports in spatial mode. You really do feel like you are physically present. I can see a huge market for real estate tours, live sports, and all streaming platforms. I also see a huge market for things that lend itself to the need for 3D spatial awareness like teaching a mechanic, or technician to be able to fix things. I watched Band of Brothers on Netflix and the ability to watch something on a large screen from a small space like a plane or some remote place (thinking of you my deployed brothers and sisters) also holds merit. But again it is limited to how long you can stand the weight on your head. All aspects of the entertainment industry stand to benefit from the tech maturing. As good as the tech is, some relatively simple things prove to be very challenging like typing. I did connect an apple bluetooth keyboard which helped, but it changes the experience to bounce between looking through the Vision Pro to your keyboard, vs typing "with your eyes." I was curious how a video call would work. In that regard, Apple captures a virtual persona to show your face, complete with expressions, to execute a video call. My persona was kinda creepy and made me thing of the show Westworld lol. It felt like a Westworld looking version of myself. As for apps, there are hardly any available right now. So you are really left to use your safari browser and photos as the primary apps. Microsoft does have the Office apps there but again they are not as easy to use as a computer or tablet. Lastly, the social impact of wearing a Vision Pro in public remains to be seen. There aren't laws on the books regarding wearing devices like this while driving. Imagine someone walking into your local coffee shop with one on, knowing that it could be recording video? How will conducting a video call with one on in public compare to people facetiming in public? That part is fascinating as society adjusts to wearable tech. So all in all, this tech shows great promise, especially around spacial content. As it becomes lighter, cheaper and less intrusive, it will certainly gain more traction. One thing is for sure, the genie is out of the bottle and not going back in.
