I'm all caught up now for #DuBoisChallenge2024 and have completed Week 2, which is recreating Plate 12. Link to viz: https://lnkd.in/gCwq8xY5 It's a fairly simple viz though I did spend quite a bit of time messing around with the axes and formatting. I really loved the white horizontal lines on each decade in DuBois' original visualization and recreated it in two different ways - with multiple reference lines, then with a reference band and turning on gridlines (?? I know, I know). So you can swap between those two versions in my viz and see which one you like more. Data for all the challenges can be found here: https://lnkd.in/enZRmvQ2

TRESPASSING ON WHITE SUPREMACY: THE LEGACY OF ESTABLISHMENT WHITE SUPREMACY IN NORTH CAROLINA - PDF: https://lnkd.in/gzDcCvYv White supremacy offers a unifying framework for understanding the legal history of North Carolina, the current legal regime of the state, and the actions of the state in responding to protests demanding redress from that insidious history. We provide a history of the First Reconstruction in the state, the leading role of white lawyers in the subsequent reaction resulting in the codification laws advantaging white citizens over nonwhite citizens, and the continuities between the early Jim Crow legal regime and the legal reactions to current protests in the state. We explore three waves of recent protests in North Carolina in the context of this legal history: Moral Monday, Confederate monument removal, and Black Lives Matter. We argue these protests point to the reforms necessary to root out persisting institutionalized white supremacy in North Carolina. We describe the legal theories we used in defending protestors and our attempts to reconcile the promise of equal protection under the law with racially disparate treatment in the state’s institutions. In doing so, we add a universal constitutional lens to the criminal charges brought against protesters and attempt to name what has become an invisible force in interpretation of North Carolina’s history.?

How long will the American voter allow the New American Fascist Party, formerly known as the GOP, attack and destroy Democracy? When will republican supporters, that are not fascists or billionaires, stop voting against their own best interests? Seriously! In 2000, a religious zealot, Kathryn Harris-then the Florida Secretary of State, threw out 48K votes for Al Gore. These votes were from defective machines (that were dumped in black, heavily Democratic neighborhoods), failed to record proper punch marks on the ballot. The indentation on the ballot was undeniable, but in order to fully demonstrate the chosen candidate, an election supervisor wrote on the ballot to remove any ambiguity. The Jeb Bush ally and unqualified Harris used this false logic to disavow 48,000 Americans their voice in the election. An election that the dolt Dubya, won in the decrepit state of Florida, by a measly 547 votes. A republican controlled SCOTUS ruled that Bush had won, even though he lost the national popular vote, making him the fourth President falsely elected due to the asinine and antiquated Electoral College. The convicted orange rapist became the 5th due to Russian and James Comey's election interference. The retiring Sandra Day O'Connor was the swing vote in setting the course for the fascist takeover of our Democracy. That's a separate conversation. I Like Beer Kavanaugh and the handmaid Justice Bing-Bong Barrett were attorneys for the GOP arguing the case in front of SCOTUS...coincidence? Please. If you believe that then I have a bridge to sell you. And the QOP has the audacity to talk about election interference?! All this happened right under our noses and we allowed it, and continue to condone it, with voter apathy, disinformation by state propaganda networks like FOX, and lack of critical thinking skills by a large segment of the American public. Our Democracy, and our way of life-as we know it, is coming to a crossroads this November. Protect your future. Protect the futures of your children, grandchildren and future generations by VOTING BLUE and ridding our government of the fascists and anti-Americans festering within the republican party. VOTE BLUE!!!

Opinion: Black American man states that Kamala Harris and others may not have shared an accurate picture of Trump. Especially, when they called him a racist. He claims that some people are giving only partial information or false reports. He did his own research (which we recommend everyone should do), and he discovered that people were only reporting the parts of recorded information that would align to their negative and sometimes false narratives. Learning about these partial truths led him to find other serious errors in context which he shares. Listen to the rest of the "very fine people on both sides" video and the other reports he cites.
