Meet one fab fifth grader. Eniola Shokunbi collaborated with classmates and scientists from the University of Connecticut to develop an air filtering system that eliminates 99% of airborne viruses like the cold and COVID-19. The Environmental Protection Agency tested the innovation, validated its efficacy, and shortly after, Connecticut’s State Bond Commission granted $11.5 million to install the units in schools statewide. Amazing work to keep students safe and healthy!

Eniola's story reminds us that innovation isn't confined to age, title, or experience—it’s sparked by curiosity and collaboration. This achievement not only tackles a pressing issue but also redefines what young minds are capable of when given the opportunity to contribute. What if we consistently empowered students to co-create solutions to real-world challenges? The results might just reshape the future, one inspired idea at a time. Bravo, Eniola!

Certainly someone to watch in the next years. I find it amazing that today's children are motivated to address real problems in an altruistic way. I think children today are more connected with major issues and have the opportunity and support to make a difference. Case in point on this post. Conversely, when I think back to when I was 12, nuclear war was a very real fear and it was always in the back of your mind. We had an air raid siren that was tested periodically and acted as a reminder. I think if we can end the threat of conflict, and focus our children's thoughts to doing good for society, we will nurture more Eniolas in the world.

For anyone interested in additional details: “It cost $60 to make and consists of a box fan, four furnace filters, duct tape and cardboard. It was tested and certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in North Carolina for its efficiency.” “https://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/local/middle-schooler-leads-11-5-million-project-build-air-filters-schools/3415312/?amp=1 Update: This is not a novel idea: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corsi%E2%80%93Rosenthal_Box
