Recently, Bloomberg hosted the 4th annual Amplify: Black in Tech event (in partnership with Colorintech) with the goal of providing attendees with insights that further promote opportunities for Black professionals in the tech industry. During the event, attendees had the opportunity to hear insights from Black professionals at Bloomberg related to career development, increasing their impact, and building a strong network. As part of the session, I had the chance to discuss our Data department's AI initiatives and the future of the Bloomberg Terminal, as well as the importance of building an inclusive culture in the workplace. One piece of insight that I invite you to think about, as we all work to foster a diverse and welcoming environment for our employees: Being inclusive and building an inclusive workforce is not just the right thing to do; it is the thing that gives us a competitive advantage. In order to chart the course ahead of us, we need all the creativity and diversity of thought we can assemble. #amplify #ai

With BLK Men in Tech thrive conference conference set to kick off tomorrow, this weeks #tbt moment takes us back to Black Is Tech conference 2024 where I had the pleasure of running into Tatianna Mott as her organization Our Power Media covered the event. This conference, networking event, and gala season if I could give three pieces of advice based on my experience marketing my career it would be this: 1) Master the art of storytelling as it pertains to your own career journeys. Our ability to craft engaging stories around our career experiences enables us to establish more meaningful connections. Because even the stacked resumes and portfolios of previous work have a deeper story behind them. Our lives are literally transformed by the conversations we have and the questions we ask! 2) Master the art of intently listening to others. Not only do we learn more from listening but then we can specifically talk about things that are relational topics. The more we listen, the deeper the conversation can go. The best conversations are like well played volley tennis, where things flow back and forth. No expectations on a particular outcome, just returning the great conversational energy. 3) Get comfortable talking about what we like, what you know, or admitting what we don’t know (but would like learn). The things that may seem mundane, things that come second nature, or the moments when we had to overcome adversity on our career journey all serve as great talking points that can allow us to resonate with people we’d never thought we’d connect with. By authentically communicating our story we will always end up meeting exactly who we were meant to meet. I look forward to connecting with many more people and hearing many more stories at this conference.

Read the room before you try to own the room. Example: I'm currently engaged in an internal debate into whether anyone should ever speak at an event for free, and if so, who and at what stage and under what circumstances. I came across a post just now from a Black woman who shared a screen shot of a message she had sent to an event organizer explaining that she does not work for free. The post explained in detail why she will never speak at a paid event without due compensation. The post naturally brought my question to mind, but I did not ask it right away. First, I read the post carefully, noting that the OP had much more experience in her field than I have in mind. Second, I looked closely at the OP's industry and perspective. I noted that her work is and has been in the DEI space, and event organizers wanting to get positive attention for featuring Black speakers and DEI speakers need to be held especially accountable for fairly compensating these speakers for their time & expertise. Finally, I read the comments. All commenters were women, most of them Black, and all enthusiastically concurring with the sentiment that event organizers that want to profit from the time and expertise of DEI professionals need to be held to account for paying them fairly. Conclusion: I hit some Support and Love buttons, and moved along. I'll save my questions for another time and place - this post wasn't it. I could have probably shared how I've been asked to speak at events where I would still have been required to pay to attend without any backlash or hurt feelings. But I'd be making it about me, and that's not lifting, building, or shining light. So it's better to skip it. How's your LinkedIn day going today? #linkedin #relationship #marketing #socialmedia #dei

A few weeks ago on a company-wide townhall, a C-level executive commended me with high-praise in a shoutout by stating I was “hands-down the best field marketer he has worked with in his career.” At first I was flattered, however, my next immediate thought to myself was “Well, it’s because I have to be.” During the time, over a span of 3 weeks (while being sick) - I managed 8+ events, ranging from tradeshow conferences, networking events, a meetup, a webinar, and other deliverables while traveling across multiple cities and flights. As a Black woman in corporate America, we often have no choice but to work twice as hard, be twice as good, and leave little room for error. Even with that, there are moments where we deal with being overlooked, questioned, micro-aggressions, or being held to higher standards than our peers. Yes, I work hard. Yes, I take pride in the quality of my work. Yes, I understand that the work that I output is a reflection of me - and therefore, hold myself to be of high standard. But it’s deeper than that, for many of us. And so I share this boldly as a voice for my fellow Black women, a reminder for those who aren’t, and a wake-up call to those who have no idea what the constant reality is for many of us. #FoodForThought #BlackWomenInTech
