On Tuesday, we hosted a field day for our staff, distributors, and local retailers. We were able to dodge the rain long enough to share our terroir-focused vision and approach to making our whiskies amongst our wheat and rye fields just a few miles from our distillery. Jochum Wiersma from the University of Minnesota was on site to talk about their work in small grains breeding and research. Jochum has helped us select the varieties we are growing to make our whiskies. We finished the night back at the distillery for tours and a sneak peak tasting of our bourbon. Vineyard Update: We received 1.3 inches of rain this week. More rain is in the forecast. Rain is vital to Virginia’s wine industry as most of our acreage is not irrigated. The timing and severity of drought conditions determine the affect on the vintage. Last year’s dry spell was later in the growing season and we had an exceptional quality vintage. This year’s dry spell was worrisome because it was more severe and it was prior to verasion. Verasion is approximately 16 weeks after bud break. This year’s warm temps and dry conditions have accelerated the grapes. Most growers I have talked to say we are 10-14 days ahead of last year. Verasion usually starts 16 weeks after bud break (we are at week 13) but we will likely see it begin in the next week or so. We will be watching the grape bunches carefully. In early to mid-August we will start to test the juice for acid (pH) and sugar (brix). #knowyourwine #virginiavineyards #virginiawine
