This week, I worked with clients who have cases and hearings in courts outside of our jurisdiction. At the CORI/Reentry Unit of GBLS, we only represent clients with CORI charges filed in the Boston Municipal Court (BMC) when and if they can seal a dismissed or nolle prossed charges with the courts. But if a client wants to pursue a 100C petition outside of the courts that we cover, we do our best to prepare them as pro se litigants, recognizing that they do not want to delay sealing the charge(s) and that they are ultimately in need of legal assistance. We work to ensure that clients doing pro se will be equipped with all the legal resources they will need. That they will feel comfortable and empowered enough to represent themselves in court and become their best advocates. Thus, our work in pro se litigation for CORI sealing includes making sure that petitions are completed correctly, being in contact with the respective courts to schedule hearings, and drafting relevant paperwork such as affidavits. We also have a pro se packet that our clients can use to feel equipped on the day of their hearings. Whilst being a pro se litigant can seem daunting, especially as an indigent person who has zero legal knowledge or awareness, a lot of the stress can and is often mitigated by assistance from those working in the legal field. It’s important to know that we have so much power with our legal knowledge. Simply being a guide for someone, whether we directly represent them at every stage of their legal situation, can make a massive difference in how successful they can be when representing themselves. #EJAFellowUpdate Equal Justice America Greater Boston Legal Services Northeastern University School of Law https://lnkd.in/eMEZwBuN

Attended an eye-opening webinar on rural law practice in Colorado today. Here are my top 5 takeaways: ?? Law schools need to step up! Rural practitioners wear many hats, requiring diverse skills often not taught in traditional programs. ?? Don't let fear hold you back! Small towns are incredibly welcoming to new legal professionals. ?? Rural legal communities are tight-knit and supportive. Some even have matching tattoos! Talk about commitment! ?? More opportunities for community engagement await in rural areas - from joining boards to having real political influence. ?? Redefining public interest: Providing access to legal services for underserved community members, regardless of location or issue, is crucial. Rural law practice isn't just a job; it's a chance to make a real difference in people's lives and become part of a vibrant community. Thanks to Mesa Jetton, Drew Lyman, and Nathaniel Baca for sharing their experiences and insights and to Ryann Peyton and CAMP for creating such a wonderful program. Have you considered practicing law in a rural area? What opportunities or challenges do you see? Share your thoughts below! ?? #RuralLawPractice #ColoradoLegal #LegalAccess #CommunityImpact

Reflecting on this week's news and our episode of Class Action with the remarkable students from Brooklyn Law School: The U.S. Supreme Court upheld ordinances in the Oregon city of Grants Pass that prohibit homeless individuals from using blankets, pillows, or cardboard boxes for protection while sleeping within city limits. The court ruled 6-3 that these ordinances do not violate the Constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishment. This decision has significant implications for homelessness policies nationwide. Other cities have passed similar bans on "camping" in recent years, and this ruling sets a precedent. . **Listen Up**: If you're a law student or just fascinated by legal drama, check out Episode 6 of "Class Action" where law students compete in trial about a similar case in California, and state how this ruling impacts homelessness policies across the country. #SupremeCourt #Homelessness #LegalPodcast #ConstitutionalLaw #BrooklynLaw #HarvardLaw #LawStudents #UCDavisLaw Kevin Huffman Eliana Sands Anjani Shah #KatiePhang https://lnkd.in/gZkSJNhh

Teaching future lawyers to be community champions brings me immense joy! ?? At Wake Forest University School of Law we empower our students to become more than just legal professionals – we mold them into community lawyers. What does that mean? It means equipping them with the tools to use their legal expertise, research, and advocacy skills to uplift communities. They’re not just defenders of the law; they’re allies in the fight against injustice. From supporting grassroots campaigns to guiding community movements, our students learn to amplify voices, challenge unjust systems, and empower individuals to engage in local governance. Every lesson, every discussion, and every case study is a step towards nurturing compassionate, effective advocates who make a tangible difference in people’s lives. Teaching future lawyers isn’t just about shaping legal minds; it’s about fostering agents of change who are committed to making our communities stronger, fairer, and more resilient. ?? #CommunityLawyers #SocialJustice #Empowerment ???
