A colleague asked me today about serving on a non-profit board. Such important work, but I think most people don't know how to get started: I have been on a non-profit board of some sort for much of my professional career. It is a calling for me; I'm actually on two right now. I find I can't usually get the fulfillment at a moral or ethical level that I seek in a professional job, so a non-profit board is the way I meet that requirement. First, the best way to find an org to be on the board is to find an org that you support and like the mission of. My colleague was looking for animal, queer, immigrant and indigenous interests in the Kansas City area. Here are a few I found with a search (the search was "<topic area> kansas city 990", as an example): https://ourspotkc.org/ https://lnkd.in/g5m_SP44 https://kcpetproject.org/ https://lnkd.in/gAsTCHzR Next step, after you have found one or two you like - go find the 990 and read it (search for the org name withe the number 990 -- the 990 is a form they file with the IRS that tells you alot about the org and how they are doing). Also, read their website. Find the board of directors and approach the board chair or if there's a committee that you can find that does board recruitment and tell them about you and your interest and ask how you can get involved at a board level. All boards need to add board members, and they are looking for people who have an interest in the organization and can help them meet their goals. Some boards and board members help with fundraising, some help with events, some are just a governing board, there are many different ways to serve. Serving on a non-profit board is an easy and fulfilling way to give back to your community. How do you give back?

What a result.

Last night was very humbling. I had the opportunity to return to the place that gave me the tools to restart my life, and I will forever be grateful for that. Since it is Movember, which focuses on Mens Health, I have a story to share. I recently passed the 6yr mark of sobriety, but it felt a bit different this year. The first 5 years of sobriety, I took it very seriously and put all my effort into changing my frame of mind from very negative to positive. After receiving my 5-year medallion last year, things changed. I started taking every aspect of my life for granted because my life on paper looked great. I didn't take my sobriety and spirituality serious, my ego was telling me, "Jeff, you don't need that anymore. You got this." I was isolating myself and didn't reach out to my positive influences, which led to months of depression and recently planning my demise. Normal people would say, "You have a great life, how could you be depressed?" I suffer from depression because I'm not one of the normal people. I've suffered from depression since I was 13 years old, but fortunately, I now have the tools to recover. I share this because many men don't have the tools available. Please, if you're suffering inside, make a call and talk to someone. It may save your life. Empathy is the ability to imagine someone else’s experience. What is one way we can teach children this life altering character trait? Books can be amazing in the sense that they can be a window into someone’s world or experience. Books allow children the opportunity to “see” what life would be like as someone else. Books can also act as a mirror by allowing children to see themselves in the story. As publishers, we provide these experiences by producing a large variety of people in our books! We think it’s super important for children to have books that allow them these opportunities to learn about other cultures, homes, families and more! We also love for them to see themselves in a book. How do we do this as a Book Bank? We make sure there are diverse books in our collections. If we don’t have ample books, we use money that was fundraised to purchase used books. Hey everyone, we are wanting to do some type of event to help raise money for local Veterans in Southeast Texas. We are working on a large mural for AlphaGraphics Beaumont, where people can stop and take photos in front of it. We'd like to work with an organization that helps our local veterans. We would like to post 2 QR codes on the mural, 1 with their "mission statement" and 1 where people can donate to the organization. Along with the mural, to help raise money we were wanting to plan some type of event. We would love to find other businesses that would be interested in participating and helping with this. Someone who may already be doing something similar. A few of my thoughts are, match donation contributions, have a day where we give out meals to local veterans, provide a fun filled day for their children.
