Winning the University of East Anglia's Innovation Hothouse Competition was a transformative experience for both myself and TraitSeq. The mentoring from Dr Soraya Jones, Entrepreneur in Residence at UEA, was invaluable as we worked together through sessions to build my confidence, sharpen my pitch deck, and refine my communication style. She consistently went above and beyond, offering advice on team-building, preparing for investment, and other business matters that were pressing at the time. The sense of community and camaraderie built with fellow entrepreneurs during the competition was another highlight. Sharing experiences, networking, and making friends with like-minded individuals was motivating and rewarding. The investment readiness workshop with Mills & Reeve helped prepare us for raising investment. On the day of the competition, the feedback we received on our pitch deck from respected individuals in the innovation and investment space helped prepare me for pitching to external investors. As a direct result of the competition, we generated several investment opportunities and were contacted by several agritech businesses interested in our technology. Finally, winning 12 months of virtual tenancy at the Centrum building has provided TraitSeq with a strategic base at the heart of the Norwich Research Park. I strongly encourage everyone with innovative ideas or research that has the potential to make a significant impact to apply! It's always nice to see your business practices validated. In this clip, Eric Schmidt talks about the need to be frugal, particularly when handling others' money. https://lnkd.in/gF_985ZU Our founder, Dr. James Grant, has said of my approach to finances that I "stretched every penny until it screamed!" I suppose I did. Some examples: - Using personal computers rather than buying new ones - Working from home for years rather than renting office space - Avoiding hiring employees if we could do it ourselves - Paying nobody except independent contractors, and that only when we knew we needed outside expertise - Avoiding any expenses that didn't promise to advance the venture - Taking no pay until we become profitable The result: We were able to stay alive and advancing while brutally underfunded. And we managed to get our revolutionary dental implant cleared through FDA while spending only about $140,000. I'm rather proud of that. We're still lean and mean.
