?? From the Wisconsin Biohealth Tech Hub! ?? We're thrilled to share insights from a recent panel discussion held during the Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents meeting on Feb. 9. Industry leaders and campus experts came together to delve into the transformative potential of public-private partnerships in driving innovation and economic growth. Ushering in a new era of innovation and economic growth (wisc.edu) Highlighted in the discussion were Wendy Harris, Regional Innovation Officer for the Wisconsin Biohealth Technology & Innovation Hub, and Anjon Audhya, Senior Associate Dean for Basic Research, Biotechnology, and Graduate Studies at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health and BioForward Board Member. As the panel underscored, University of Wisconsin-Madison, alongside the state, is at the forefront of catalyzing innovation and economic advancement, fueled by enhanced collaborations between academia, industry, and other key stakeholders. The focus on leveraging federal funding opportunities, such as the Build Back Better Regional Challenge and the National Science Foundation Engines program, demonstrates a concerted effort to maximize resources for impactful initiatives. Of particular note is Wisconsin's participation in the Phase 1 application for the U.S. Department of Commerce U.S. Economic Development Administration Regional Technology & Innovation Hub program. Wendy Harris is spearheading the consortium's Phase 2 application, potentially unlocking substantial federal grants to further propel biohealth innovation in the region. Anjon Audhya emphasized the crucial connection between industry and universities, highlighting the strength of partnerships in driving progress. These insights underscore the pivotal role of collaborative efforts in fostering groundbreaking research and driving economic prosperity. As we embark on bold new initiatives to address global challenges, Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin's words resonate: "We have a lot to be proud of. My job — our job — is to make this institution even a step stronger — by building on this excellence and also by thinking in big, bold ways about where we can take a quantum leap forward to serve this state and the world on a whole new level." I am very proud of Victoria S. Niehues, who has successfully completed her pre-defense for the Tinbergen Institute's MPhil with flying colors! ?? In her thesis, Victoria combines high academic rigor with great data to help solve a highly practical and important issue for the #pharmaceuticalindustry: How to learn and continuously improve new drug launches (#launchexcellence). Victoria's contribution is twofold. First, she offers a rigorous, concise and practical definition of ‘launch excellence’, that promises much-needed clarification and consistency for the practice. Second, she proposes a sophisticated econometric model that addresses a long-standing challenge: How can we properly track and learn from past launch performances (and to do so, she analyzed hundreds of new drug launches in the last years in the US). We are excited that Victoria will continue her promising research with us at Marketing Science @ESE, further enriching her thesis during her PhD dissertation.
