Lately, I've noticed many discussions about tactical voting, with phrases like "Don't vote Green, it's a wasted vote" or "There's no point voting for [specific party] in this area." It's got me thinking. While these conversations are important for strategic voting, it's crucial we don't undermine someone's choice to vote for a party they truly believe in. Democracy is about voicing our beliefs and values, not just following what seems expedient. The idea of a "wasted vote" troubles me. It's a mindset that may have contributed to the challenges we face today, including the climate and biodiversity crises. Every vote counts, and every voice matters in shaping our future. If you feel compelled to support a party you believe will make a difference, even if they haven't historically held seats, go for it. History shows that smaller parties can still influence major policy decisions- I mean we are seeing this right now with Conservative party policies. Another reason I feel strongly about this is because many people I know will have the opportunity to vote for the first time this year. If they are told, 'vote for X party to stop Y party' it can prevent them from engaging properly with political parties and understanding what they most align with. Let's empower each other to vote authentically and with conviction. Let us encourage positive political discussions and debates- not ones that makes people feel silly and stupid. Lets try to be curious about why people are choosing to vote the way they are rather than critical. Attending the Norms and Behavior Change Conference (NoBeC), titled, Democracy Under Threat, sparked some essential thoughts and insights that we feel compelled to share. ?? Democracy relies on fragile social norms that are under serious threat right now. From startling statistics about the rise of autocracies worldwide to the surge in misinformation, it’s clear that a renewed commitment to democratic norms is needed now more than ever. So, here’s a crucial question for all of us to consider: Is party loyalty more important than the stability of our democracy? Join us to rethink democracy—not just as a system but as a collective responsibility – bound together by shared beliefs. Your voice matters, your vote is essential, and together, we can help fortify democracy. If you don’t have a plan for where and when you’re going to vote, put one together.
