The recent anti-DEI lawsuits harm the philanthropic and nonprofit community development sector as well as the emerging small businesses that rely on them for start-up capital. SBAN is a network intentionally designed to support organizations like the Fearless Fund that was recently sued, an Atlanta-based nonprofit that awards grants to business ventures by Black women. A spring article from Nonprofit Quarterly considers how these "test case" lawsuits are part of a larger effort to challenge any consideration of race in institutional practices, warns against expensive litigation costs and public access to sensitive information, and encourages organizations to begin conducting internal risk assessments to understand vulnerabilities, or re-characterize how they label their work while continuing to support BIPOC businesses. Still, the Brookings Institution's recent panel (that featured legal counsel for the Fearless Fund, Alphonso David) reassured investors that investing in Black or Brown businesses will hold up in court. The London Legal Walk (LLW) is almost upon us again. Next Tuesday will mark the walk's 20th year of bringing together the legal community to support free legal advice services on the front line - a big milestone and a brilliant cause! I can remember the first time I participated in the LLW. I was in awe of the sight of thousands of lawyers who had joined together for this cause. The paths ahead and behind me were packed with suit/ trainer combos and a rainbow of firm branded t-shirts bobbing along. Some brought their dogs, others came as a team. Colleagues, ex-colleagues, opponents and new acquaintances all chatting along the route. For those willing to queue, a well deserved ice cream* could be acquired along the way. A fun way to 'get your steps in'. More than that though, no matter which firm or chambers, size of organisation, area of law, level or route of qualification, it was warming to see the profession come out in force to support those who most need access to justice, but can least afford it. My Keoghs colleagues and I shall be walking on Tuesday, and we would love it if you would lend your support to us - be that, by walking with us, by commenting with words of support below, by sharing this post to raise awareness to the cause, or by donating (anything at all) on our fundraising page - particularly as Davies will very generously match fund anything we raise! NCVO's in its report for #TrusteesWeek, Understanding Trustee Recruitment and Retention Challenges has put a spotlight on the issues affecting Trustee recruitment and retention. 80% of Boards currently have a vacancy and with 65% having a vacancy for six months or longer. There are a myriad of reasons for this, including the natural cycle of Trustees coming to the end of their terms. But it also reflects the increased pressure on Boards as a result of the current climate.
