Are you working in or interested in the #bioeconomy and #biomaterial side of the circular economy? We are exploring a potential professional development retreat on #circularmaterials and their application, advancement, technical development etc, hosted in a very unique waterfront bio-based location 2 hours outside of Manila, Philippines ???? in early-mid 2025. We are doing an expression of interest to gauge the appetite for such an event. The UnSchool of Disruptive Design and Circular Futures is partnering with KindMind's Abi Mapúa to curate and host this 4-day in-person only event. Personally, I'm really interested in uncovering more about the opportunities and advancements of the bio-material world and was inspired by the rich bio-capacity of the Philippians and innovation in this space on my last trip there for work.?I think there has been a massive shift in the ways bio-based materials are being investigated and used, we are well beyond the days of just a few 'natural' materials to select from and it's a big part of the #circulareconomy to have highly effective biomaterial alternatives to plastics. The idea is to run an event that brings together people already working in the field with people using/wanting to use bio-materials in design and those who are ready to expand their capacity in this space for a collaborative 4-day retreat that we will curate, but also invite active participation in the knowledge sharing by participants. Plastic is literally everywhere — from the depths of the oceans to Antarctic sea ice to the microscopic pieces within our bodies. Despite it needing 1,000 years to decompose, we rely on plastic because it is cheap to produce and indispensable to our economy, from packaging and transportation to #medicine and fashion. Regardless of how much we put in the blue recycling bin, plastic is expensive to collect and sort and mostly ends up in landfills, oceans and eventually groundwater and fish. So how do we eliminate or reduce the 1 trillion pounds of plastics that are manufactured every year worldwide? That’s the mission of the ASU Biodesign Institute Center for Sustainable Macromolecular Materials and Manufacturing at Arizona State University, which brings together #research in chemistry, chemical engineering, health sciences and mechanical #engineering to address the perplexing problem. “We’re striving to develop next-generation materials that are more sustainable, more renewable and more recyclable,” says Tim Long, director of the center within the Biodesign Institute, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary throughout 2024. Long came to ASU in 2020, building on a successful 20-year career at Virginia Tech, where he rose through the ranks, ultimately creating and directing the Macromolecules Innovation Institute. #ASU #ASUBiodesign #ASUResearch

Join us on December 13th from 11:00 to 14:00 for the next session of the "Design Meets Science" event series, focusing on chemical and environmental technology. This event will explore how science can foster industrial sustainability, offering innovative solutions for valorising organic materials and residues while advancing the circular economy. ?? We’re proud to announce that Professor Allan Niidu, a key member of TalTech Circular Economy Core Lab, will deliver an insightful talk on the challenges and opportunities of recycling secondary raw materials, with a special focus on plastics. Allan’s work at the Core Lab revolves around creating circular value chains and sustainable business models, making this a must-attend session for anyone passionate about sustainable innovation.
