Life on Earth depends on #wetlands. These ecosystems support over 40% of all #biodiversity on Earth, and supply freshwater and food around the world! Wetlands contribute significantly to local and national economies. It's estimated that wetlands support livelihoods more than a billion jobs and services, valued at $47 million dollars globally. Habitat loss, climate change and pollution are threats to wetlands. We are losing wetlands 3x as fast as we are losing forests. On World Wetlands Day, February 2nd we can ensure a resilient future by working together for wetland conservation. ??Wetlands are often called the 'kidneys of the planet' due to their crucial role in filtering and purifying #water. But their importance doesn't stop there. #Wetlands are essential for supporting and sustaining life on Earth ??. Safeguarding and restoring our wetlands lies at the heart ?? of solving our twin #climate and #biodiversity crisis. This infographic highlights the many ways wetlands serve us — as vital habitats for #wildlife ??, sources of livelihoods, food ??, and freshwater ??, as well as natural climate regulators. Let’s take a moment to recognise the irreplaceable role wetlands play in preserving #biodiversity and safeguarding our planet. ?? World Environment Day 2024: Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience On June 5, 2024, we celebrate World Environment Day, the biggest international day for the environment. This year’s theme is “Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience.” Under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration,” we focus on revitalizing ecosystems, combating desertification, and building resilience against drought. ?? Why Land Restoration Matters: Ecosystems play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity, regulating climate, and supporting livelihoods. Desertification threatens fertile land, affecting agriculture, water availability, and communities. Drought resilience ensures our ability to withstand water scarcity and adapt to changing climates. Join us in restoring our land, protecting our future, and becoming part of the #vydyuthi #GenerationRestoration #worldenvironmentday

Today marks World Environment Day which alongside World Earth Day in April (their focuses are different) plays a crucial role in raising awareness about the state of our planet. World Environment Day aims to bring global focus to humanity’s responsibility for the environment and the 2024 theme focuses on campaigns around land restoration, combatting desertification and building drought resilience, under the slogan “Our Land. Our Future”. Given Australia is the second driest continent on the planet with 35% of it receiving so little rain that it is virtually desert, this year’s theme resonates deeply. How can we help? Plant native species, conserve water, raise awareness, educate our children - every small action counts. It is up to each of us, not just the government or someone else, to do everything we can to safeguard our environment. #worldenvironmentday #ourlandourfuture #futuresustainability

The IUCN's global mangrove assessment highlights the critical endangerment of mangrove ecosystems in Sri Lanka. However, the Sri Lankan government is taking steps to degazzeting areas like Wedithalatuv PA, known for its rich biodiversity. It's essential that we continue to raise awareness about the importance of preserving these precious ecosystems and support conservation efforts to protect them for future generations.
The first global mangrove assessment for IUCN’s Red List of Ecosystems shows over half of the world’s mangrove ecosystems are at risk of collapse. Mangroves are threatened by deforestation, development, pollution, and dam construction, but the risk to these ecosystems is increasing due to sea-level rise and the increased frequency of severe storms associated with #climate change. In the absence of #conservation action, about 7,065 km2 of mangroves will be lost, and some 16% submerged underwater. Restoration, the establishment of coastal protection areas and community engagement are some of the strategies we can use to help protect these environments. Learn more https://buff.ly/3UUY9hx
