Beyond Trees Network presents The Miyawaki Method: Growing Urban Forests Fast, A Global Discussion With: Anand Kumar, Peepal Baba, Akshat Tyagi (India), Cathy Medvigy (Japan), Andrew Lampl (USA) and Florencia de los Santos (Mexico) When:?Monday, June 3, 2024 | 9:00 – 11:00 AM EST (GMT -4) Languages:?Spanish with simultaneous interpretation into English To Attend: Join Zoom Meeting https://lnkd.in/ehY7N6r5 Meeting ID: 899 3408 5835 Passcode: 882078 “The tree planting we are going to do … is not for the production of timber or the beautification of the area.?This project is for yourself—you as local community people—to protect your lives from disastrous situations.” - Dr. Akira Miyawaki In cities, spaces—particularly green spaces—are at a premium or scarce.?Yet, green spaces are more important than ever as urban areas have become denser.?The benefits they afford – especially those provided by urban forests – are critical with increased temperatures, suffocating air quality, soil and water pollution, and other challenges that have befallen communities. In the 1970’s Dr. Akira Miyawaki—a botanist from Japan believed in the strength of restoration of degraded soils and deforested lands using natural vegetation.?He then developed a method to restore native forests from seeds of native trees. After much experimentation, his afforestation technique yielded a faster way of growing tiny forests at a rapid pace (see figure).?In a nutshell, it uses a strict method whereby at its heart is the creation of dense, mixed plantings that can mimic natural forests.?These tiny forests grow ten times faster than those found in natural forests—in as little as two to three years! In Japan, the Miyawaki Method has been used to create forests that mitigate effects of tsunamis, wastelands, soil erosion, and other disasters. ?Communities and volunteers have underpinned the success of these afforestation activities.?The Miyawaki Method has since been followed or adapted worldwide.?Despite its popularity, the Miyawaki Method is not without controversy.?But why??Cost, practicality, maintenance efforts??Can the method truly benefit the diverse communities, environments and climate around the world??Will it work in arid climates that are quite dissimilar from that in Japan? On June 3, Monday, at 9 AM EDT (GMT-4), the Beyond Trees Network is hosting a 2-hour discussion on the Miyawaki Method.?Our main guests include theorists and practitioners from Japan, India, the United States and Mexico.?Learn how some of them have adapted the technique to accommodate their city’s ecological parameters.?Explore the methodology, the successes and challenges in this discussion/workshop.?Join us and ask questions about the method.?Will it work where you are??Rather, will it work?

?? A Call to Action from the Fifth Nature Roundtable At the recent Nature Roundtable, hosted by BWD Strategic and the Sydney Institute of Marine Science, a diverse group of experts gathered to discuss how collaboration, transparency, and innovative strategies can accelerate our transition to a nature-positive future. The day double underlined the urgency and the collaborative effort needed to preserve and restore our natural ecosystems. Key Takeaways: 1. We need to collaborate: No single entity can tackle the environmental challenges alone. The synergy of scientists, nonprofits, advocacy groups, and communities is pivotal in sharing knowledge and innovative ideas. 2. Build new markets for Natural Capital Investment: The discussion emphasised the value of natural capital investment, urging us not to wait for perfect metrics but to make progressive steps with what we have, highlighting that natural capital can often be more valuable than financial capital. 3. Incremental Progress: Embracing incremental steps and leveraging First Nations knowledge and nature technology are crucial. It’s about balancing the risks of doing too little against the risks of overreaching. 4. Holistic Approach: Nature, like health and safety, should be integrated across all business operations, not confined to a single department. This integration is essential for addressing the interconnected challenges of climate, land, air, and water. 5. Action over Perfect Plans: The roundtable emphasised the need for action over endless frameworks and discussions. It’s about making sustainability inherent in our discourse, akin to occupational health and safety standards. The Cost of Inaction: William Glamore described an image which caught my attention. If sea water continue to rise from our inaction to make necessary changes, the only option Sydney has is to build a sea wall to prevent the flooding of the harbour and river system. This is the reality of the situation. Call to Action: It's time for businesses, communities, and individuals to recognise the intrinsic value of nature and work together towards a sustainable future. Digital Village is looking for Collaborators such as technologists, data professionals, businesses and communities to work together. Get in touch to learn more about what we're doing. Thanks for sharing your valuable perspectives: Rayne van den Berg, Anna PhD, SFHEA-Ferris, William Glamore, Amelia Ellerton (née Moulis), Sam Kernaghan, Martina A. Doblin, Jordan Gacutan. And a special thank you to Derryn Heilbuth and Luke Heilbuth?for taking the initiative for bringing this together. #NaturePositive #CollaborationForChange #SustainableFuture

ULTIMATE is organising with the CIRSEAU Cluster a whole-day Pre-Conference at ECSITE Conference 2024 in Ljubljana on Wednesday 5th June 2024. Water has always been a precious resource. Climate change is magnifying its significance to our society as water scarcity and pollution become some of the most pressing issues of our time. Such challenges demand urgent attention and innovative, co-created solutions. How do we respond? This hands-on workshop, organised by the CIRSEAU Cluster of EU-funded projects on water and sustainability, will showcase how versatile and effective stakeholder and citizen engagement methods and innovative tools contribute to the fields of sustainability, circular economy, societal and science engagement, focusing on water as a valuable resource. The selected participatory frameworks and tools create an environment conducive to knowledge-sharing, cultivate robust connections and promote the exchange of valuable experiences. The workshops’ schedule is prepared to present the tools as well as facilitating an immersive experience, where participants will be able to interact, discuss and learn about a wide range of engagement frameworks and tools that span from Communities of Practice to Living Labs, and from Augmented Reality to Serious Games. The interactive sessions will further equip participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to effectively implement these strategies within their specific working environments and their own fields, using water as an example. The pre-conference is open to anyone working to engage stakeholders in innovative ways, from the specialist in communication to community facilitators.
