The importance of citizen science and integrating it into existing data interpretation systems...
????? A fantastic exclusive in The Guardian this week by sandra laville, sharing the highlights of the September Great UK WaterBlitz! The results of the WaterBlitz showed that 61% of datapoints across the UK have poor water quality with significant regional variation. For this WaterBlitz we joined forces with researchers from Imperial College London to test water samples for additional chemicals. Of the samples tested, 100% had further contamination; with 80% of samples presenting some level of risk from analysed compounds to aquatic life. Contaminants included caffeine, antidepressants and painkillers. You can read about the highlights of the report in The Guardian here: https://lnkd.in/gXDQe7vA Explore the scores of your local water bodies, and the full results, in our Great UK WaterBlitz report on our website: https://lnkd.in/eY6bauDN A huge thanks to the thousands of volunteer citizen scientists across the UK, including many groups from our supporters The WI (National Federation of Women's Institutes), for braving the wettest weekend of the year, 20-23rd September, to take part in the Great UK WaterBlitz. Citizen science has the power to generate vast, accurate water quality data, but regular testing is key. Join us for the next Great UK WaterBlitz in April 2025, register your interest on our website: https://lnkd.in/e5GVxhpE

This week's The Economist features several International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE) outputs, which have been borne from laborious, consensus-building processes. https://lnkd.in/eN46RKmU There are now hundreds of researchers from around the world behind the IPIE, working towards scientific consensus about a host of technology harms and how to mitigate their impact on our communities, our children, and ourselves. So more from the IPIE in the months and years ahead!

The Scientific Recommendation by Scientific Advice Mechanism #SAM on how to strengthen the #OneHealth approach in the EU was published yesterday & today is #global #onehealth day. ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? We are on our way together with GASTALDELLO Annalisa to #Brussels to discuss based on our EU Science, Research and Innovation activities with joined forces with Humane Society International Francesca Pistollato : Leveraging human-based methods to tackle unmet medical needs (e.g., medical countermeasures and surveillance) with key objective of our talk: ??Showing the results of the HSI scoping analysis aimed at gathering multi-stakeholders’ feedback on what public health challenges and UMNs would benefit from interdisciplinary collaboration in the EU ??Exploring with DG #JRC case studies the power of interdisciplinarity using integrated One Health approaches and human-relevant #methods science in addressing complex public health threats (Mental Health /Decoding #Depression, Antimicrobial Resistance, etc.) The One Health approach recognises the inherent connection between #human, #animal and #plant health and the health of our #environment & its #biodiversity and the #impact that this has on a wide range of policy areas. The key recommendations include reinforced #onehealth #collective #transdisciplinary #governance & #collaboration across #policy areas, more #integrated #preventive #actions, #surveillance and #riskassessments. Considering today’s challenges to our health and our planet — from anti-microbial resistance #AMR to #avianflu #mpox #mentalhealth #epidemic #climatechange and #pollution — it is clear that One Health is more important than ever.
We have published new scientific recommendations on the One Health Governance in the EU! ?? Our scientists urge the European Commission for integrated health policies across the EU. They highlight how human, animal, plant, and the health of our environment are interconnected. ?? Policymakers need to recognise these connections, and do more to seek optimal outcomes for people, animals, the environment, and the ecosystems that we are all part of, rather than taking a narrow anthropocentric view. ?? Key recommendations: ·??????Cross-policy integration for robust health solutions ·??????Enhanced monitoring to detect emerging threats ·??????Supporting education and training in One Health Read our new publications here: https://lnkd.in/e-JZ82p6

?? The Scientific Advice Mechanism to the European Commission has just published a very important, long-awaited Scientific Opinion on how to implement the #OneHealth approach in the European Union. It is important, because our warmer and less biodiverse world is also a world in which threats to human health are rapidly accelerating. It is long-awaited, because despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the #EuropeanGreenDeal and the vision of a #EuropeanHealthUnion, the window of opportunity for an ambitious EU-level response to these threats may already be closing. ???? ?? I must admit I would have liked to see a bolder stance on policy coherence, particularly from the perspective of integrating 'primary prevention' (i.e. addressing the environmental drivers of disease) in other policy areas. In any case, the recommendations of the SAM are incontestable, and I hope they are taken forward under the new Commission. PS: My former team at the European Environment Agency was involved from the outset in this process, and I am glad to see Ian Marnane and Jeanne Vuaille cited among the officials consulted by the SAM, together with many representatives of the other EU agencies that are part of the cross-agency #OneHealth task force (including Carlos Gon?alo Das Neves, Stef Bronzwaer and Ole Heuer). In many ways, the recommendations of the Scientific Opinion, which explicitly mention the task force as an example of existing efforts to increase intersectoral and trandisciplinary collaboration on One Health, are also a testament to their work and dedication.
