Challenging Norms: Women Empowered to Rethink Gender Stereotypes Initiated by OFSI and in partnership with Hope Foundation, Tharagambadi, our Women's Empowerment Programme kicked off with discussions on gender stereotypes. On the first day, the women were initially hesitant and restricted in their movements. However, as they engaged in various activities, they started to feel more comfortable. The conversation centered around traditional views, such as the belief that girls should prioritise marriage over financial independence. They realised that financial independence is incredibly important to stop domestic violence and give women the opportunity to recognise what they want to do and how they want to live their lives. As the discussion progressed, the women began to reconsider perspectives, acknowledging that it's acceptable for women to work and even earn more than men if it benefits the family. This shift in thinking marked the beginning of a transformation. A Much-Needed Initiative for Men's Empowerment While scrolling through LinkedIn today, I came across a post by @IqraQuraishi, and it truly struck a chord. It made me realize how rare it is to find discussions or initiatives focused on Men's Empowerment. We often hear about women empowerment, and rightly so—it’s an important conversation. However, when it comes to men, the struggles they face—be it psychological, emotional, or financial—are seldom addressed. Even during interviews, candidates are often asked to talk about women empowerment, but the topic of men’s empowerment is rarely, if ever, brought up. Iqra’s initiative is a refreshing and much-needed step in this direction. It reminds us that empowerment and dignity are universal rights. Addressing issues faced by men doesn’t take away from supporting women—it simply adds balance to the conversation about equality.
