I had the privilege of attending an enlightening panel discussion featuring esteemed experts in the field of public health. The event was highlighted by a captivating fireside chat with two distinguished guests: - H.E. Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari, Minister of Public Health, Qatar - David Kershenobich, incoming Minister of Health, Mexico The conversation primarily focused on the current state of programming for Metabolic Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) and Metabolic Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH) in their respective countries. However, the discussion expanded to encompass broader global health challenges. **Key Takeaways:** 1. **MASLD/MASH Programming:** Both ministers shared valuable insights into their countries' approaches to addressing these liver conditions. 2. **NCD Prevention:** The conversation emphasized the critical importance of preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) on a global scale. 3. **Urgent Health Priorities:** Special attention was given to the pressing need to tackle obesity and diabetes, two major contributors to the global disease burden. 4. **Multifactorial Risk Management:** The panelists stressed the importance of comprehensive strategies to reduce NCD burden and improve overall health outcomes. How I spent my Saturday morning...Thanks to RNZ for holding space for Mona Jeffreys & myself on this increasingly important topic. The kaupapa that myself and the "Long Covid Collective" (a collaborative, cross-university panel of researchers and clinicians, with lived experience aiming to piece together a better evidence based pathway & understanding of the condition/impact). Our work is a crucial aspect in resolving the exceptionally poor quality of life of tens of thousands of kiwis now experience & will be preventative in the future for those who unfortunately find themselves (through no fault or any 'weakness'), joining the ranks of our Long Covid patient community. We know what needs doing, we can clearly articulate it and it will change how we think about managing chronic conditions and in turn we believe it will signficantly reduce the patient demand & cost on services. We have a MVP outline and information deck ready to go. We have teams gathered on all sides to support bringing it to life. We simply need to fund it - relying on government for innovation is simply not an option (especially not right now).
