Thank you Effie Pakistan for these two days - 5 things I truly appreciated this time: 1. Heirarchy of needs wise, we were comfortable, first and foremost, good venue, decent food, access to some hot tea coffee. We are people first ?? and jurors later. 2. The group heads seemed to be well versed with bias and how stealthily it can creep in. This is a tough thing to hone across groups and it seemed like the Effie team had put effort into ensuring discussions and dissections remain healthy. Fills one with hope, really ? 3. Smart, humble, efficient volunteers tp help us out. Shout out to our Aun from Saleem Habib University who did a fantastic job! 4. A proper mix of seniors, agency people, brands and industry professionals - we rarely get together and this felt promising, not to 'network' but simply for perspective, a refresh. No one has the time otherwise. 5. No clutter, smooth flow. Two to three crisp emails pre event and a personalised password for the platform later - helps one focus and keep time. Since tech is always a struggle in local events and there was no struggle here, thank you for the BTS efforts on it. Here's to people who uphold the power of consistency. Cannes Lions Day 1: The first Grand Prix and Gold Lions have been awarded – so what do they tell us? Here are a few top-line thoughts from the opening day’s results in Lions Health, Outdoor, Print & Publishing and Audio & Radio: Big brands are back: Jury presidents made much of the fact that mega brands like Coke and Magnum have been producing outstanding work this year. The emphasis seems to have shifted towards ‘commercial creativity’ – rather than purpose for its own sake. Using creativity to drive business growth is absolutely on message at Lions 2024. Purpose moves centre stage: That said, there are also some potent examples of how purpose can become part of the commercial heart of a campaign. Coca Cola’s Recycle Me and Pedigree’s Adoptable both placed purpose at the centre of their winning campaigns. AI is already making its mark: Lions Juries don’t like tech for tech’s sake – but they do admire a clever AI-powered campaign. Siemens’ success in Pharma with Magnetic Stories - and an Outdoor Grand Prix for Pedigree’s adorable Adoptable - are powerful advocates for mashing AI together with great creativity. Shared success: There was plenty of success on day one for entries from the Middle East, India and Latin America. BBDO Dubai’s Child Wedding Cards looks like it will be one of the week’s high impact success stories, after picking up a Grand Prix on day one. Laughter is the best medicine: The Cannes Lions team let it be known that humour would be celebrated this year – and early award winners have shown this to be the case. Specsavers’ Misheard Version and Dramamine’s The Last Barf Bag are both worth checking out if you want to see how humour can lift even the most unlikely products and services. As Jefferson Starship might plausibly have said: “We built this city on sausage rolls”. Looking forward to a fascinating day two, with numerous entertainment and craft awards up for grabs. For all my non-polish speaking friends, here are a couple thoughts (shortened for a LinkedIn post) I shared as #EFFIE judge on the topic of #FullFunnel, #MultiChannel #Measurement. A straightforward answer would be to say that the only proven method for Full-Funnel measurement is Marketing Mix Modelling (MMM). Such an answer may not be particularly helpful to many marketers for a couple of reasons, esp. ?? Data quality ?? Data availability ?? Cost In reality, other methods (often much less sophisticated but still useful) need to be employed... and there are plenty. It's also important to clarify what we mean by “measuring effectiveness.” ? Are we talking about post-campaign measurement, such as Brand Lift Study or Attribution Modeling? ? Or are we referring to in-campaign measurement, which aims to optimize the campaign “live”? First, we need to determine at which level of the sales funnel we are experiencing growth barriers. For example, a small e-commerce business might have an issue with awareness, not with acquiring registered customers via performance. In such case - even a simple Brand Lift study (on top of usual site analytics) can help evaluate whether a campaign has effectively influenced awareness. There may be no single, ideal answer for which type of measurement is best for #live optimization in #UpperFunnel, but #Attention metrics in programmatic space (e.g. Adelaide, Lumen Research) are surely very promising (and available with Adlook ?? )! To measure the effectiveness of #LowerFunnel activities, it's often worth examining Attribution Modeling, which analyses touchpoints & placements which helped drive conversions. However, ???#caution??? is advised! Simple models often yield results not much different from Last Click approach, significantly overestimating the impact of certain activities (especially search). Also - even the best models don’t account well for the impact of offline media. Even with a rich media mix, it's still useful to track very basic indicators such as Direct or Organic traffic during campaign. Even without sophisticated tools, this can help assess whether offline (and online) activities — which were not necessarily expected to prompt a click — correlated with increases in brand & product interest. Years ago, it was said that in marketing, the only correct answer is always “it depends.” Today, we live in a world where there are tools and technologies objectively better than others, yet the complexity of marketing communication rarely allows for a one-size-fits-all solution.
