Flooring sales drop by almost a quarter The value of flooring retail sales plummeted in April, dropping by almost a quarter compare with March. Sales in England, Wales and Scotland were ￡211,524,000, 23.98% down on the previous month. Sales were just 1.4% lower than April 2023 and down 3.67% on April 2022. Sales were 21.29% higher than April 2021 and 83.34% up on April 2019. Despite the falls, April 2024 was still the 95th?highest value of sales of 460 months recorded by ONS since comparable records began in January 1986. Furniture sales fall back to pre-lockdown levels The retail value of furniture and lighting sales plunged in July. Sales in July reached ￡1,040,385,000 in England, Scotland and Wales according to ONS data, but this was 22.48% lower than June 2024 and 18.16% lower than July 2023. The performance is the lowest since February 2021 (￡886,977,000): when the country was in the second month of the third lockdown, and a month before non-essential retail reopened and in effect lower than when store did reopen thanks to inflation (￡1,095,646,000).
