With the clocks going back last weekend British Summer Time (BST) and daylight-saving time ended. Although the autumn change is often seen as the "good one" because you get an extra hour in bed (!), the days become shorter, and the nights become longer. Our thoughts turn towards the end of year festivities. However, this is the time of year when we at Parity Trust turn our thoughts to, and focus even more on those within our communities who may be alone, marginalised, and vulnerable. We want to ensure that working with our local authority partners, we can provide the financial support to enable homeowners to stay safe, secure, and particularly at this time of year, warm in their own homes, so that they can enjoy their independence and the festivities and celebrations. The genesis of Parity Trust is to provide the link between our partner local authorities and our residents. We have a mandate to provide good, positive outcomes, and to change lives for the better. I was thinking about the idea of “community” yesterday as we sat along the parade route watching our hometown 4th of July parade. The sight of neighbors and friends coming together, waving flags, and sharing smiles reminded me of the true essence of community. According to Wikipedia, “a community is a social unit with a shared socially significant characteristic, such as place, set of norms, culture, religion, values, customs, or identity. Communities may share a sense of place situated in a given geographical area or in virtual space through communication platforms.” So many of us rely on our community to support us, shelter us, educate us, and include us. Our hometown, with its familiar faces and cherished traditions, provides a sense of belonging and continuity that is irreplaceable. However, the idea of community has evolved significantly over the years. In addition to our local neighborhoods, many people now find meaningful connections through online communities. These virtual spaces can be just as valuable, offering support, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging, no matter where we are in the world. Whatever community means to you—whether it’s the friendly faces you see every day, or the online friends who share your interests and passions—I hope you feel included and valued. Whether or not you're planning your own Independence Day celebration, it's important to take precautions to keep your pets safe before, during and after Fourth of July festivities. ??Make sure your pets have identification tags with up-to-date information. ??Make sure the environment is safe and secure. If your neighbors set off fireworks at an unexpected time, is your yard secure enough to keep your pet contained? ??Leave your pets at home when you go to parties, fireworks displays, parades and other gatherings. ??Loud fireworks, unfamiliar places and crowds can all be very frightening to pets, and there's great risk of pets becoming spooked and running away. ??Keep your pets inside if you or your neighbors are setting off fireworks. ??Keep sparklers, glow sticks, fireworks, charcoal and kabob skewers away from curious pets.
