We are looking for a few more alum volunteer mentors who are willing to mentor 1st and 2nd year students, to help them navigate the courses, program and university. There are three different ways to participate as a mentor: 1.?????Ad hoc: if you sign up as an ad hoc mentor, students who are interested in will be connected with you to set up a coffee chat ? 2.?????6-month commitment: this is our traditional mentorship program, which pairs you with a student for a 6-month period. Mentor matching is done twice per year. 3.?????Both! Mentors choose how they want to engage, and you can choose either option above, or both. These relationships often have a significant impact on our students, and mentoring can be personally very rewarding. Interested? This month, the Graduate Center for Inclusive Mentoring focused on navigating expectations and strengths of mentors and mentees. Mentoring relationships are enhanced and misunderstandings are minimized when expectations are regularly discussed. To better align expectations, mentors could use tools like the Student-Advisor Expectation Scale (page 19) in this Equity Minded Mentoring Toolkit https://lnkd.in/g8yBNYZj

With the teacher shortage and more teachers entering the profession without teacher training programs, the need for new teacher mentoring is higher than ever. What is working well for you in your mentoring programs? What are your ongoing challenges with mentoring?

If you need a little positive energy, my 12-year-old just ran for student council and was elected class representative on the platform of CHAOS (control, habituality, accuracy, organization, synchronism)(also, lollll) They explained the tangible actions of their platform to me: they have identified a few specific problems that create pain and time waste for everyone at schoolc and they have a proposals either in the format of a technical solution, a set of agreements, or a process. I was like wow this is incredible, that’s exactly what I do at work! They were like it is effective everyone in my class voted for me! Parenting and mentorship is similar in this regard: modling desired behaviours/qualities/skills, fostering a safe environment with opportunities for those to flourish, and providing support where needed. Life is tricky and work can be joyless, but moments like these make it all worth it, and building the next generation of leaders and thinkers is what we are here for.
