I've been lucky enough to have many great Vets in my life. Both of my grandfathers, several of my friends (including two whom I consider brothers from another mother) as well as many clients. The population of veterans in this country is one that falls into broad categories. For the most part we do well. the things we learned in the military translate well into successful life lessons. We bolster communities through positive action, stabilize companies thru our hard learned leadership, start up businesses, and now run for public offices. Then there are those other guys who aren't doing well. After combat we sometimes lose our purpose in life. without purpose we die. We die a long slow death of anger and disenfranchisement or we just jump the shark and end it. Some branches and units do worse than others in a post combat world. There are tons of books on the subject. you can pick your favorite psychobabble to adhere to. My particular take is exactly that when we lose purpose we lose hope. When we lose hope we lose faith. We lose faith in God, the United States, our social organizations, & if left unchecked, one another. In my mind this is the proverbial fate worse than death. I believe the solution to this is not government programs, VA counseling & pharmaceuticals, or discounts at Lowe's for having served (although I use the Lowe's thing every couple weeks). The solution I believe is to help veterans return to faith and thus return to a purpose where as I said above, those skills that were forged in military leadership schools and hardened on a battlefield will serve new purpose going forward. I see much of serving God as a military process. it is relatively easy to see Christ the warrior king throughout the Bible and also to see militaristic aspects of the Devil's attempts to block and counter. To that end I am starting up a Christian fellowship for combat veterans. We will start meeting on June 16th at the Kalispell, Montana VFW at 1130.

When we discuss the topic of "Cognitive Warfare," one may think at the macro level like how information or propaganda is used to destroy trust between people and/or their government and military. And at the micro-level a nosy neighbor can ruin the therapeutic environment that we live in (burst the bubble of the healthy milieu). One of the reasons for staying away from "toxic" people. I had been working with a veteran for about 6 years and he is doing well. This person is an introvert but is happy to receive compliments from others. He found enjoyment in doing yard work and landscaping in one of his siblings yard. Even though his family may not agree with some of his landscape ideas, they still allowed him to work on their yard as a hobby because it gives him joy and created a therapeutic environment for his continued post-traumatic growth. One day a nosy neighbor had a conversation with the veteran and inserted ideas that changed the context of the therapeutic environment. He convinced the veteran that his landscaping is so nice and he should be charging his family for it. Remember that his sibling did not really like the style of the landscaping but allowed this veteran to work their yard for its therapeutic benefits. The whole context of the environment changed, and the veteran no longer enjoyed working on the yard. It even caused arguments between him and his family because he expected to be paid for his hobby. In other words, it transformed the enjoyable activity (hobby) to "work." That is a simple way to explain "cognitive warfare." Changing the perception and the context of the activity can cause discontent and dissatisfaction. Six years of therapeutic work and trust between family members was destroyed in one or several days of haranguing by a nosy neighbor. "Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up." (Romans 15:2 NIV) *I am a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner with over 9 years of experience as a Combat Casualty Visiting Nurse for veterans and active-duty military members.
