Wondering why the “Fostering Health Equity” Conference was so imperative to have? For those unfamiliar with this state/state investigative process, in most states, a review board is appointed by the governor and is comprised of a diverse list of health care experts that reviews all maternal deaths that occur while a woman is pregnant, or within one year of the end of her pregnancy. ??KEY Missouri Findings: 84% of pregnancy related deaths were determined to be preventable. Mental health conditions, including substance use disorder was determined to be the leading underlying causes of maternal death, followed by cardiovascular disease then homocides. The Pregnancy Associated Mortality Ratio for Black women was 3X the ratio of white women. The statistics provide data of worsening outcomes. The stories are shocking and so sad. Patients being dismissed, biases, access…. All lives that COULD HAVE BEEN SAVED. The preventable rising loss of mothers across the nation year/year is simply unacceptable. Looking at midwifery care in other advanced countries that also have much better outcome results and it’s easy to see how our system is failing. Cerebral Palsy (CP) is caused by damage to the developing brain during pregnancy, the birth process or up until the age of two years. In some cases, the exact cause of the damage is almost impossible to identify. However, South Africa has had a substantial rise in the number, and the quantum of medical negligence claims, where CP is a direct result of negligent care. This CP Awareness Month, we're sharing this video which explores the cost of caregiving for children with CP, drawing on Percept's research into the lived experiences of children with CP. The costing of CP negligence claims centres on costs attached to the child. But thinking about the child in isolation from their family is not reflective of real life or how costs are managed in households. We found that the role and costs to caregivers are highly undervalued.
