"Dirty clothing wears out quickly because dirt cuts textile fibers..."
That’s a line from the U.S. Army Field Manual 21-15, Care and Use of Individual Clothing and Equipment. My daughter came across it while flipping through my old collection at home, and it reminded me of the small but essential lessons we learn in the military.
The manual goes on with practical advice on washing clothes in the field, repairing a rip, and even sewing on a button. It’s simple, rugged, and practical—just like the values of those who served before us.
This Veterans Day, I’m honoring the generations of resilient, self-sufficient Americans who paved the way, passing on a legacy of grit, resourcefulness, and determination. Their values shaped my path, as they did for so many others.
Take a moment today to reflect on those who came before us—and, if you can, talk to a veteran. Ask them about the small lessons, the manual pages that mattered, and what it means to carry those values forward.
If this post resonates with you, share it with others or post your own story. Let’s keep these values alive by sharing the experiences that made a difference.
