As we wrap up National #RuralHealthWeek, we want to take a moment to highlight the need to invest in anesthesia care in rural Ontario. All Ontario residents deserve timely access to high-quality health care. Unfortunately, where you call home in Ontario increasingly plays a critical role in how timely that access is. Growing human resource challenges, including in anesthesia, have resulted in particularly long waits for surgeries and other needed appointments and procedures for rural residents, and too often results in patients having to leave their community to get the care they require. The need for increased and more stable staffing in rural Ontario is a key concern of ours, and we are pleased to see it recognized in the Ontario Medical Association's new #StopTheCrisis campaign. For almost 20 years I've been modeling performance in urgent care and when you boil it all down, volume in #urgentcare is still driven by location, location, and location. That's why I thought it appropriate to revisit site selection in my June, 2024 feature in JUCM: Journal of Urgent Care Medicine, an official publication of the Urgent Care Association. A couple of weeks ago I had the privilege of joining 40,000 #commercialrealestate professionals at the International Council of Shopping Centers annual meeting in Las Vegas. In the article I quote ICSC..."patients won’t alter their established behaviors to seek out your center. If a more convenient alternative is available, they’ll often choose it. Urgent cares must meet patients where they are and make the decision to seek care both convenient and obvious."
