Work is hectic. Dinner needs to get on the table. There are emails to review. A new idea for that problem at work. Lots of things to manage and figure out. The value of slowing down can seem counterintuitive. Like you need to get those things finished then you take that moment. Consider that taking a pause first helps all those other things shift. Your clarity comes back on line. Taking that pause. Where your breath deepens naturally. Your shoulders drop away from your ears. Your gaze softens. Your mind gets quieter. The thoughts floating across become observations of the present moment. The sky. Your body. The sun. The smells. The sounds. These moments of stillness even if they only last 30 seconds allow our inner wisdom to speak. When you create space, it creates room for more than your reactions. You need to clean up your mind! Thoughts can be like rubbishes piling up on your desk. If left uncontrolled they will clutter your space and the longer you leave it the harder the job will be. You know it (even if only subconsciously), because the first thing you do is to organize your desk. This is how you take control of your physical space. But right now you only do half of the job. To get to what’s inside, you need to recreate that order in your mind. So use that strong habit of cleaning and connect it with a mindful practice like breathing. Try this simple practice this week each day and see how it changes your energy and how that changes your experiences: ? Start your day with this simple exercise to ground yourself and set a positive tone. It only takes a few minutes, whether you do it first thing in the morning, during your coffee break, or any time throughout the day. 1?? Begin with one minute of mindful breathing. Inhale deeply through your nose for 5 seconds, hold for 5 seconds, and exhale through your mouth for 5 seconds. I love using the Oak Meditation app for this—its simplicity is just what I need. 2?? After your mindful breathing, focus on this thought: How can I bring positive energy to the world today? Think about the people you’ll interact with and the conversations you’ll have: ?? Your kids ?? Your partner ?? Your colleagues ?? Your clients or boss ?? Your friends ?? Your neighbors ?? People you encounter each day (like servers, cashiers, anyone and everyone you interact with) You have the power to influence every conversation and interaction. The more intentional you are about spreading positivity, the more positivity you’ll create. If you anticipate a challenging interaction, addressing it consciously and early on can help you steer the narrative positively. ?? Remember, you can control the narrative and the energy. Try being mindful for a week and observe the difference it makes.
