We're proud to announce that our Research Coordinator, Silvana D'Ottone, has successfully defended her doctoral dissertation with the maximum distinction ?? In her research, Silvana developed an instrument to measure partisan moral reasoning and tight moral reasoning, two forms of evaluating moral transgressions in political settings. Her research also shows ways to dampen support for politicians involved in severe transgressions, like corruption. Congratulations! ?? ?? ??

Participants are the backbone of our research because our research is intended to provide insights into their priorities and concerns. However, some scholars have raised concerns that when implemented poorly, research may perpetuate colonial relationships and power imbalances. With the help of the Culture, Research Ethics, and Methods (CREME) team, we have been finding ways to conduct research in ways that preserve participant dignity. In this groundwork, Joel Wambua, Nicholas Owsley, and Tom Wein outline how we approach the issue: https://lnkd.in/dXUPAxJr?

The Philosophy Of Bertrand de Jouvenel Today we share the philosophy of Bertrand de Jouvenel (1903-1987) from his work ‘Sovereignty: An Inquiry Into The Political Good’, which was originally published in 1957. Bertrand de Jouvenel was one of the great political thinkers of the twentieth century, though his work does not fit neatly into received political categories. Jouvenel's achievement was to present an original political science, one that responds to the circumstances and tragedies of the century and draws on the insights of tradition while avoiding the abstract and ahistorical character of much of our contemporary political theory. read more - https://lnkd.in/gyyC_JsN

Last week, Lingyu Fuca presented new research with Yuehong Cassandra Tai, and Isaac Pollert, and Nitheesha Nakka at the Midwest Political Science Association Annual Meeting. They study the attributes of state legislators, and their constituencies, that predict the posting of anti-Asian hate speech and counter hate speech on Twitter by the legislators themselves. See this write-up by William Tazza, summarizing the work and presentation. https://lnkd.in/exDtPGsY

?? ?? Fascinating effort to rethink the role of deliberative mini-publics from a non-Western perspective! “This article constructs a positive case for deliberative mini-publics (DMPs) from the perspective of contemporary Confucian political philosophy. Extant empirical and normative studies of DMPs have treated them primarily as a concrete way to instantiate the deliberative conception of legitimacy advocated by Western political philosophers such as John Rawls and Jurgen Habermas. Almost no attention has been paid to how certain non-Western philosophies like Confucianism could provide different understandings of such an institutional innovation. The article fills this gap by exploring why DMPs should be incorporated into the two ideal types of regimes considered by today’s Confucian political philosophers, Confucian democracy and Confucian political meritocracy. In this regard, it makes an original contribution to both the field of democratic theory and the emerging paradigm of Confucian public administration.”
