When I imagined parenting, I envisioned raising a fierce future woman leader—a mini-me ready to change the world. But life had a different plan: my two incredible boys. What I once saw as a missed dream, I now see as an opportunity to raise not just good men—but allies the world needs. In my latest blog post, From Boys to Allies: Parenting for Gender Equity, I share the intentional steps we’ve taken to raise our boys to stand beside women, support them, and help break down barriers. And while this post focuses on raising boys to be allies, the same lessons apply to girls—helping them see their own worth and the value of lifting others up. When it comes to advocating and empowering women, some might struggle with joining the efforts since they aren’t sure of where to start. With this report, we are thrilled to share our reflections on Women Win’s contributions to the gender justice movement since 2007, and the roles we aim to play in continuing to support the movements. Our journey is marked by learning and collaboration, and we?are excited to keep responding and adapting to the needs and together with our partners, including activists, groups and women’s funds that form part of the gender justice movement. We strive to uplift collective impact and knowledge and, together, work towards a future where every girl and woman exercises their rights. ???? Time to put our money where our mouth is? ?? Time to back the the overlooked & underinvested in power for change? ?? This 2021 briefing from Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) found that: ?? Feminist movements drive social change- a global comparative analysis of policies on violence against women in 70 countries over 40 years concluded that the autonomous mobilisation of feminists is the critical factor accounting for policy change domestically and transnationally — not political parties, women in government, or even factors like national wealth. ?? Though the interest in financing gender equality and feminist collective action has grown over the years, the backlash against gender justice in many countries and the severe under-resourcing of feminist movements persist: ?? 99% of development aid and foundation grants still do not directly reach women’s rights and feminist organisations. ?? Only 0.42% of foundation grants are allocated towards women’s rights. ?? Despite new funding commitments, women’s rights organisations receive only 0.4% of all gender related aid. ?? Compare this to the massive funding is being driven against the human rights of women and LGBTIQ people in the service of ultraconservative, fundamentalist, and patriarchal agendas. ?? Between 2013 and 2017, the “anti-gender” movement received over $3.7 billion USD in funding – more than triple the funding for LGBTIQ groups globally in those years. ?? Funders and actors with power must respond to the urgency of the moment and the challenges it presents with solidarity and bold actions. Resources supporting feminist movements should be as rich, significant, and transformative as feminist organising itself. The briefing recommends that funders: ?? Leverage their political commitments to start new funding programmes or review the ones already in place. ?? Make their eligibility criteria and funding mechanisms fit for purpose to fund organisations that have the greatest impact on women’s rights. ?? Commit to developing accountability mechanisms directly to feminist movements. ??Embrace and include participatory governance models that include constituency-led and grassroots feminist actors. ?? To successfully achieve gender equality, a bold resourcing agenda for feminist movements is truly non-negotiable.??? We are in a critical moment for generosity. While I can't speak to every role, in my experience professionals funded by federal grants often work behind the scenes to support people in their most difficult moments. They are processing data about the latest cancer research, coordinating emergency funds to victims of violence, ensuring kids in school are fed, and making sure our elderly receive the medications they need. The recent wave of layoffs due to pauses in federal funding is undermining this support network. Across the country, dedicated professionals are facing sudden job losses, throwing not only their lives into uncertainty but also the lives of everyone in a global network of social support that impacts everyone, everyday. As news reaches me abroad of the shifts in Washington, I came across and want to share the upcoming Feminist Funded conference this fall in Washington DC. The event will gather leaders in feminist philanthropy to discuss the role of foundations, businesses, and cross-sector collaboration in advancing equity and justice. The coming years will require bold, sustained investment in initiatives that uplift people - not just as a response to crises, but as a long-term commitment to justice and the future of our economy. I firmly believe that social good is good for the economy. If governments step back, the private sector and philanthropy must step forward.
