Recently, many startups have been resorting to layoffs in their quest for profitability. #OlaCabs, laid off 200 people #Byju's?laid off approximately 500 employees?in April. #Cultfit (Fitness Startup) laid off 100-120 employees?in January. and many more.... So, even if you're considering joining a startup during this layoff season, it's crucial to ask the following questions to HR & founder of the Startup. 1. How much funding has the startup raised, and what are its plans for future fundraising? - This will help to assess whether company will be able to pay your salary during crisis. 2. What are the growth plans of the startup for the next 2-3 years? - This will able to help you to understand whether company has potential to become a Unicorn. 3. Can the company provide information about any recent layoffs? -- We want to make sure they're not playing a game of musical chairs with the employees! 4. What is the work environment like, including hierarchies, designations, and communication practices? Because let's face it, we're all hoping for less drama and on time salary, right? 5. Can you provide details about the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) that the startup offers? - Who doesn't want to make money through this ESOPs. Before joining a startup, it's essential to research the company's financial status, funding history, and the state of its industry. PS. Paraform just announced our seed round today! ?? So I'll also share how I joined Paraform a couple months ago. I was approached by a recruiter—on Paraform—about Paraform. Fongyen L. and I had a great chat on a Friday in January about the company and the role, and I thought it was a great fit, both in terms of it being a talent-related company and it being an early operator role. I had a Zoom chat with John Kim and Jeffrey Li the following Tuesday, then came in for an onsite lunch on Thursday, where John and Jeff were awesome in how transparent they were about the company, its challenges, and the massive opportunity space. Such important data, Peter Walker! So many things have to go right for employees to cash in on their equity grants. The data doesn't show what proportion of the departing employees left voluntarily vs. involuntarily, but that's an important factor as well. It may not always be the employee's choice to leave. Page 238 of The Startup Lottery book shows the Stairway to Options Payout—the seven things that all have to happen for employees to profit from their stock options. For more detailed analysis and a lot more about managing your startup career, check out the book: https://lnkd.in/dtSNE82b Leaving a company before you vest or not exercising your options ensures no payout. But staying and exercising doesn't necessarily ensure a payout either. VCs know that every option grant has a high probability of fully or partially returning to the company. In fact, many count on it, and some less than scrupulous investors have even gone so far as to terminate employees prior to vesting to ensure it.

Go West .... Startups based in the West census region captured 62% of all VC raised by companies on Carta in Q1 2024, the highest quarterly figure since Q1 2019. The Northeast, South, and Midwest saw decline. Ironically the job market in startups has stabilized it appears as the companies on Carta laid off more than 28,000 employees in Q1. But job cuts have grown less frequent since January, with March seeing the fewest monthly layoffs in nearly two years. The bad news is valuations down outside early stage and shutdowns are more common if you raised a priced round vs those that have yet to get into priced equity fundraising. Shutdowns rose 133% for Series B companies over the past year. It's not just the smaller ones. Investor appetite for companies that are several years ago founded and have not discovered product market fit are getting squeezed out of the market. Big companies and startups are all on to the next tech. It's a disruptive market that does not leave a soft-landing or M&A event. We saw it in 2008 and here we are again - this time things are way out-sized when compared to 2008 with the sheer number of VCs & startups jumping 4-5X and interest rates putting pressure here too. The soft landings are out there if you have the right strategy and position your company / assets correctly. One that we shut down in Seattle 2009 timeframe soft landed because we could carve it into two assets we could execute a deal on. Getting to work on selling your baby is one of the hardest things ever, but we did it together (I had a Bosworth help me out!) Opportunities do exist.
