You will probably have seen the riots that shook the UK just over a month ago, representing a frightening time for many around the country.?Fuelled by disinformation, this anarchic violence highlighted deep, polarising fractures in our society.?An exploration into how the UK’s far right has changed, the article attached in the comments from Daniel De Simone of the BBC is a must-read for those interested. This article, alongside the riots themselves, raises many questions for us to consider.?Particular attention should be paid to the concepts of “nationalism” and “patriotism”: we are pushed to better understand what these concepts mean, and whether they are good or not. Is there a spectrum from flag-waving at the Paris Olympics to the brandishing of weapons against those deemed “Other”??Are nationalism and patriotism compatible with a respect and appreciation for the international community??Is patriotism linked more to why we enjoy the offering, services and history of a country, or to that which the government engages with? Our group languages courses are designed to allow you to explore engaging topics and debate big questions, all while developing language, academic and professional skills.?“The International Community” is one of our group courses where you can achieve this development, and we’ll be focusing on some of the questions above in Week 3: Nationalism and Patriotism.?Check out our services on our website, and contact us for more information. Please let us know what you think about the above questions in the comments.?We want to encourage debate, and provide the space to develop a range of applicable skills. #ESL #englishlanguage #groupcourses #anglais #английский #inglés

An interesting article about the French language might delve into its rich history and global influence, emphasizing its evolution from Latin roots to becoming one of the most widely spoken and taught languages in the world. French is not only the official language of France, but also holds a significant place in international diplomacy, arts, and education, with over 300 million speakers across multiple continents. The article could explore how French has evolved in response to historical events, like the Norman Conquest of England, which left a profound mark on the English vocabulary. Additionally, it could discuss the variations of French spoken worldwide, from Quebec in Canada to Francophone Africa, each with unique accents and vocabulary, showcasing the diversity within the language. The role of the French Academy, tasked with preserving the purity of the French language, and the tension between traditionalists and those embracing modern linguistic changes, such as the influx of English loanwords, would offer fascinating insights. Furthermore, the article could highlight the enduring charm of French, often regarded as the "language of love" and a symbol of elegance, as well as its relevance in a globalized world where it continues to shape politics, culture, and communication. #SNSInstitution #SNSDesignThinker #DesignThinking

"Despite persistent myths about how little French Quebec anglophones speak... the research underscores the potential for “les anglos” to be useful allies in the protection and promotion of French within Quebec and ambassadors of bilingualism in Canada." https://lnkd.in/emxz_s6X

Federal failure continues: Caving into the separatist/nationalist “French is in decline” narrative. Hopefully the next Federal Liberal Party leader will break free of this disingenuous rhetoric and address the language issue in Quebec based on real social science data and a good dose of common sense. The “evidence” of a decline is equivocal at best depending on the different statistical findings you cherry pick from our last census. A Minister of Official Languages should know better than to answer a complex question with a yes or no answer. Injecting intellectual honesty into the Quebec French language debate is not the strategy that this new minister is interested in pursuing. 8.5 million Francophones speak French in Quebec. Of the 1 million Anglophones the vast majority are bilingual. But French is in dire danger? Please. We deserve better than this.
