I was thrilled to attend the Reuters Global Energy Transition #GET24 conference in New York last week, where I had the opportunity to discuss innovating a future-ready grid in the US.? ? There’s no doubt about it – we need to build new electric infrastructure and streamline the permitting process to deliver the energy transition at pace. But?by?harnessing innovation, we?can make sure that we only build the network infrastructure we need for?2050.?‘Smart’ is cheaper than ‘dumb’. ? We’ve already started investing in and deploying grid-enhancing technologies (GETs). In Upstate New York,?we?recently installed National Grid Partners' portfolio company LineVision’s DLR system on four transmission lines, marking the largest operationalisation of DLR in the US. Based on pilot deployments in New York and Massachusetts, LineVision’s sensors can increase the capacity?of select?transmission lines?under specific constraints?by?material amounts. #EnergyTransition #CleanEnergy #Energy

More than cat pictures ?? In #Germany, we currently have approx. 97% of coverage in #4G. The next 2% are deemed feasible with some effort. The last 1% will be the hardest. This last %age is often in #protectedareas, which need the most to be monitored (e.g. fires, invasive species, etc). Increasing the coverage is therefore not about sending cat pictures. But about preserving our most vulnerable #people and natural #resources. To accomplish this mission, we need a strong collaboration throughout the value chain: politicians and administration, #TowerCo's (such as DFMG Deutsche Funkturm GmbH), #MNO's (such as the Deutsche Telekom or Telefonica), #OEM (us!), local population (that's you!). This collaboration is only possible thanks to partners such as the Mobilfunkinfrastrukturgesellschaft mbH (MIG) who bring everyone at the table, ensure #transparency, #moderate the discussion.
Connecting people... What a terrific day of conferences organized by the Mobilfunkinfrastrukturgesellschaft mbH (MIG) ! Stakeholders from the whole industry were present to discuss the Status Quo, share their view on the Quo Vadis and discuss the challenges of getting clean energy where it is most needed (#GreenPower4Towers). Politicians (from various factions, regions, levels), #TowerCo's, Operators, customers, #distributedenergy systems... MuWind was (of course!) present. The discussions highlighted few points: - Local power generation with #PV and #windenergy, together with storage capabilities is a must for the last #whitezones. - Connecting 95% of the people is the easy part. Getting to 97.5% is feasible without (too much) compromises. But getting to 100% will require compromises. - Closing the 4G network is an enabler for modern #agritech. That's part of our #Mission at MuWind and we're glad to be at the table to represent #smallwind turbines. A huuuuuge congratulations and thank you goes to the team at the MIG. Ernst Ferdinand Wilmsmann and his team did an amazing job over the last 4 years. They filled the gap between all the stakeholders at local/regional/national level. They had a tangible impact on the life of people who are still isolated.

This innovative buoy harnesses the power of ocean waves to generate clean energy! ????? I recently got to know about this fascinating device, the C4 Wave Energy Converter (WEC) by CorPower Ocean, a giant buoy that utilizes wave motion to create #sustainable energy. This 60-foot tall device is built to withstand even the strongest storms. It works by converting the up-and-down motion of waves into rotational power through an ingenious internal system. What truly sets the C4 apart is its ability to adapt to wave conditions. During storms, the buoy cleverly enters a "transparent" mode, allowing it to ride out the waves safely. CurrENT is starting a new series #CurrENTTechTuesdays, where for the next 8 weeks we will be showcasing the innovative grid technologies that we based our study with Compass Lexecon on, ‘Prospects for Innovative Power Grid Technologies’. #InnovativeGridTechnologies can drastically increase capacity at both the distribution and the transmission level. As well as this, deploying innovative grid technologies at scale can save up to €700 billion in costs by 2040, according to the projections of our study.? This week's technology in the spotlight is #DynamicLineRating. #DLR uses weather parameters, such as wind, to increase the amount of current that can be passed through conductors. The cooling effect of a windy day means that the overall amount of current that can be safely passed through the conductors increases, making more efficient use of the existing grid. DLR systems can increase the current and make the most of unused potential compared to a ‘one-size-fits-all' maximum current on conventional lines.? What are the key benefits?? ? DLR provides a better understanding of actual line limits. ?? Reduces congestion through optimization of asset utilization. ? Supports the integration of renewables by allowing for reduced RES curtailment. ??It can increase a line's capacity by up to 45%.
