Since last year's horrible derailment took place in East Palestine, Ohio, railroad safety has been on everyone's radar. Railroad companies have been trying for years to implement "one person crews" as opposed to "two person crews" despite train derailments essentially happening everyday. Thankfully, most train derailments don't result in catastrophic events. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) creates and enforces rail safety regulations, administers rail funding, and researches rail improvement strategies and technologies. It is one of ten agencies within the United States Department of Transportation which is lead by Pete Buttigieg, a member of President Biden's Cabinet. President Biden also appointed Amit Bose to be FRA Administrator. Today, Secretary Buttigieg and Administrator Bose announced a new regulation that will go into affect which mandates two person train crews! This new regulation is obviously a win for rail labor unions, like SMART Transportation Division and Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, and the communities that have railroad tracks going through them! https://lnkd.in/gSxyuXdr

Four railroads have filed challenges in federal appeals courts, arguing against the new rule requiring two-person train crews, stating that it is arbitrary, capricious, and an abuse of discretion by the Federal Railroad Administration. The rail industry claims that safety data does not support the need for two-person crews and believes crew size should be determined through negotiations. #freight #freightindustry #railroad #freightbroker #thursdaythought Christian Peters - CTB, LaShawn Brown, Christine Taylor, Chris Jones, Nick Roth

The members of #ILRail put significant dollars, resources, and planning into ensuring our nation's railroads are tremendously safe. It is worth reminding both the public and policy makers that our industry is among the safest places to work, we are the safest way to move goods overland, and accident rates have dropped dramatically in the last quarter century. Read more via a new white paper from the Association of American Railroads about the work we do on safety and how our railroads are committed to being even safer. ?
The Federal Railroad Administration’s 2023 safety data demonstrates the industry’s commitment to continued improvement and the strides we’ve made to safeguard employees, the communities we serve and the goods we move. Key takeaways: ??Freight remains among safest places to work ??Rail remains safest way to move goods over land ??Class I mainline accident rate dropped 42% since 2000 Our new White Paper highlights the steps we're taking to get even safer: https://ow.ly/iCV250QLcru

So this is “See Tracks? Think Train Week” (formerly Rail Safety Week, as explained below). The folks at Operation Lifesaver, Inc. (OLI) coordinate efforts among federal agencies (Federal Railroad Administration and Federal Highway Administration), railroads (Association of American Railroads and American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association and all their members) and other state agencies. I am in Norfolk VA attending the Council on Rail Transportation of the AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) and will post tomorrow on a panel I’m on this morning. Take some time to visit the OLI website to learn more about what they are doing to reduce the frequency of incidents at highway-rail grade crossings. The vast majority of rail fatalities reported by the FRA are associated with drivers at grade crossings and pedestrians trespassing on private rail rights of way. Do your part to be careful around rail lines, whether as a driver, a train passenger or a pedestrian on a walk or hike—trains are quieter than you expect and faster than they appear. Be careful out there! #ST3Week #railroads #railsafety #safety

We are kicking off #SeeTracksThinkTrainWeek with today's theme: You Can #STOPTrackTragedies. Always be cautious when approaching railroad crossings and never walk on or too close to railroad tracks. See Tracks? Think Train? Week (formerly Rail Safety Week) is a concentrated week of rail safety education focusing attention on the importance of making safe choices when driving or walking near railroad tracks and trains. First held in the U.S. in 2017, this collaborative effort among Operation Lifesaver Inc., State Operation Lifesaver Programs, and rail safety partners across the U.S., Canada and Mexico aims to reduce railroad related injuries and fatalities. This week focuses on preventing railroad crossing and trespass incidents across North America and concentrating public attention on the need for rail safety education. #ThrowbackThursday: Paving the Way for Safer Railways Back in the late 19th century, the railroad industry was booming, but it came at a heavy cost. Thousands of workers lost their lives or were injured every year due to the dangerous conditions on the rails. Enter the Safety Appliance Act of 1893 – the first federal law aimed at improving safety in the industry. It required railroads to install specific safety equipment like automatic couplers and air brakes, transforming worker safety forever. While the immediate impact was mixed—some accident rates decreased, while others rose—the Act laid the groundwork for ongoing improvements in rail safety. It also marked the beginning of serious federal regulation aimed at protecting workers across industries, an essential step toward the safety standards we uphold today at JLN Safety. ?? It’s a reminder that every safety regulation has a story and a legacy. At JLN, we’re proud to build on that legacy, ensuring safety is at the forefront of every industry we serve. #SafetyFirst #RailroadHistory #SafetyApplianceAct #JLNThrowback #WorkerSafety #HistoryOfSafety #TBT

Are Railroad Jobs About to Get Safer? The Federal Transit Administration has published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that would create new safety standards for Rail Transit Roadway Worker Protection. At Railtowns United, we see this proposal as a step in the right direction, ensuring that transit employees who live and work in our communities are able to perform their jobs safely. For our member communities, the ripple effects of this proposal extend beyond the immediate safety of transit workers. Enhanced safety standards can bring about a culture of safety that benefits everyone in our communities. Their safety improves our safety! The proposal seems to align well with Railtowns United's mission to advocate for infrastructure and technological solutions that enhance the safety and viability of railtowns. 7 个月East Palestine was about a failed wheel bearing and has nothing to do with one/two person crews. East Palestine needs to be about a discussion of detecting and preventing mechanical failures and updated technology and policy about hot boxes and wheel temperatures.
