**A Question… or Maybe a Rant?** Transitioning into a new field, even within the broad area of sustainability, is not easy and requires genuine effort. In the job application process, there is often a clear requirement for practical experience—experience in real-life roles with tangible projects and case studies. While certifications and courses can enhance theoretical knowledge (which I am grateful for), they don’t replace the need for hands-on experience. To gain this experience, one option is to apply for internships or volunteer positions in companies that align with your interests. This approach allows you to learn the ins and outs of your desired field and the organization. Here’s my question: internships are typically targeted at students who have just graduated or are nearing graduation. As a 36-year-old looking to enter a new field without practical experience—despite having knowledge and experience in a related area—how can I effectively apply for internships? At times, I find myself being considered either overqualified or underqualified, depending on how my background is perceived about my new interests. It’s hard to believe that six months have already passed since I began my internships with two United Nations organizations...Time truly flies! During my internships with the UN Secretariat, I contributed to Protection and Gender Capacity Building, as well as Renewable Energy. I’m grateful that both teams recognized my value and allowed me to apply my communication skills across these diverse sectors. They have provided me with valuable insights into international development, particularly in crisis response, capacity building, and disaster and risk management. While working for the UN may seem like an immediate path to global impact, the reality is that true influence is built over time through collaboration, continuous learning, and a deep commitment to the mission. It’s not just about the outcomes, but the journey and the opportunity to contribute to something larger than oneself. As I conclude my internship, I am deeply appreciative of the opportunities for professional growth and the lessons I have learned. Beyond gaining practical experience, I have developed a deeper understanding of several key principles that will guide my career moving forward: 1???Manage Expectations: The United Nations, like any organization, is driven by the collective effort and dedication of its people. Real impact is built through ongoing collaboration and consistent commitment, often through the completion of routine tasks and the willingness to go above and beyond. 2???Effective Communication is Key:?Strong communication skills are essential in the UN environment. Articulating your contributions clearly and ensuring that your perspective is understood are just as important as the work itself. 3???Work Smart, Not Just Hard: Success isn’t about tireless effort - it is about strategic focus, prioritizing tasks, and working toward measurable outcomes. 4???Foster Strategic Relationships: Engage with people who can offer valuable professional insights and recognize your contributions. 5???Embrace Exploration: At the early stage of career building, it is not necessary to have a fixed direction. Every experience is an opportunity for learning and refinement through trial and error. 6???Invest in Personal Growth: Before striving to make a global impact, focus on personal and professional development. True alignment with the mission of any UN organization begins with self-awareness and adaptability. I'm incredibly thankful to my mentors, colleagues, and team for their guidance and support throughout this journey. Moving forward, I’m excited to apply these lessons to make a meaningful contribution.
