Finding Unity in Diversity: Reflections on Easter, Passover, and Ramadan ??As we approach the end of the season of celebrations, we are reminded of the beautiful parallels between Easter, Passover, and Ramadan. Despite the diversity of our traditions, these occasions serve as poignant reminders of the values that bind us together as a global community. Just as Easter celebrates renewal and rebirth, Passover commemorates liberation and freedom, and Ramadan fosters empathy and spiritual growth. In each of these observances, there lies a profound message of resilience, compassion, and solidarity. In a world often marked by division and discord, let us take inspiration from these shared principles. Let us embrace the spirit of inclusivity, understanding, and harmony that transcends cultural and religious boundaries. As we gather with loved ones to break bread, share stories, and offer prayers, may we recognize the common humanity that unites us all. May these moments of reflection and connection remind us of the importance of coming together, even in the face of differences. I believe in fostering a culture of unity and respect. Yom Kippur starts this evening for the Jewish Community. It is a day of fasting, self examination and prayer. Being able to fast and even saying, have a good fast as a greeting, became synonymous with the holiday for so long. For myself and others that have medical issues, we can not fast. You are not supposed to put that burden upon yourself or others. You have to take care of your own needs. You are essentially excused. To keep this day meaningful for myself I focus elsewhere and I thought I would share a few things I do before the holiday starts. 1. I attend services, virtually. While I wish I could attend in person, I am blessed to be able to have the option to open my computer and be in community with a wonderfully inclusive temple (CBST NY). 2. I abstain from other things. I still go electric free, so I don't turn on or off lights for 24 hours. I don't watch tv or use my electronics in any other way, either. I also don't write during this time. 3. I use the time outside of services to read, meditate and contemplate the year ahead. The intention of the day is to focus on prayer. 4. In terms of eating/ drinking, I only eat/drink exactly what I need and when I need it. I don't have any extra's like treats/ sweets. I also make sure if anyone else is observing the holiday to not eat in front of them, out of respect. I hope this is helpful and informative. For everyone that does celebrate may you have a meaningful Yom Kippur. If you don't celebrate and learned something new, I hope you can takeaway that there is always a way to accommodate a holiday for anyone. The Unseen Helpers is a Cherokee tale on the importance of kindness. Generosity is a central cultural value of the Cherokee nation, as it is with Native American nations generally, and is regarded as especially praiseworthy when the giver does so without expectation of reward or recognition, simply because it is the right thing to do. This concept is not unique to the Cherokee nation but is common to all Native peoples of North America. A person is expected to offer kindness without expectation of reward, in the same way the Great Spirit has given all good gifts to humanity. In Cherokee belief, the Creator God, Unetlanvhi, freely gives to all living things, and so, in honoring the Creator, one should do likewise as much as one is able to. The Unseen Helpers illustrates this concept, subtly, as the reason for the help offered to the central character is not given until the end of the story. There is no date of composition for the story as it was passed down through oral tradition by the Cherokee storytellers for centuries until it was committed to writing in the late 19th century, but the tale is still told and remains as popular in Cherokee communities today as it was in the past. #Cherokee #History #WHE
