Decolonizing global health training and curricula. We have argued elsewhere that global health mentorship, in its current form, intentionally or not, is predominantly grounded on colonial roots, and called for the decolonization of global health mentorship: https://lnkd.in/eHH3qE_S " A decolonised global health mentorship agenda is highly needed. In 1970, in the Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Paulo Freire described how a teacher, by simple virtue of having power over the curriculum, the dispensation of knowledge and what is allowed to be taught can influence how students think with respect to values, attitudes, and beliefs. When students and communities are expected to be passive recipients of “knowledge” and interventions with no say in design or content, agency is removed, and the “help” becomes a tool to oppress voices in societies” #globalhealth

"Affirmative Action Matters in Public Health" by Karol Dean, PhD, and Ronisha Edwards-Elliott, MSW, Mia Bonds, Jessica Coffee, and Mia Hayford A year has passed since the Supreme Court’s decision on affirmative action in college admissions, and its impacts on community health are becoming increasingly apparent. This ruling has significant implications for the diversity of health care providers and the quality of care in under-resourced communities. At Health & Medicine, we nurture college students (through our AHEC program) and graduate students (through our Schweitzer Fellowship program) who will be affected by this decision. As we engage with these students to build a workforce committed to health equity, the Supreme Court’s affirmative action decision will shape the demographic makeup of future health care workers, potentially limiting the representation and cultural familiarity needed to effectively address inequities in health care delivery and health outcomes. ??
