Though winemaking in Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe dates back to 1683, most vines were abandoned or torn out by war, and by 1997, only 10 had survived. Today, the region is comprised of nearly 200 wineries, making up 90% of Mexico’s wine. So who is responsible for the region’s recent growth? As SevenFifty Daily reports, “Pedro Poncelis Raygoza, the founder of Vinícola Punto y Aparte, believes the identity of Valle de Guadalupe is in the hands of the next generation of winemakers.” Raygoza, once named the best sommelier in Mexico by the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale, may have a point. In recent years, we have seen second- and third-generation vintners transforming their family vineyards and producing innovative wines that excite today’s wine consumers. In this piece for Business Insider, I share the five best states in the US for wine tasting.? Believe it or not, all 50 states grow grapes — even in cold and snowy places like Alaska and Vermont and tropical spots like Florida and Hawaii. I'm a certified sommelier (as you know), and there are five states I always recommend if you're looking for the best wine, wineries, and wine-tasting experiences. https://lnkd.in/gZ-HzskK

“14,OOO ACRES OF VINEYARDS The Merrill family is a very special family. They are responsible for managing vineyards for some of the most well-known wineries to optimize the quality of their grapes. Remember, you must have high quality grapes to make high-quality wines. They also have 400 acres of vineyards on their estates in which they sell quality grapes to well-known wineries.” Excerpt taken from the newest edition of the book: Exploring Wine Regions: The Central Coast of California #winelovers #booklover #winestagram #wine #grapes #winegrapes

CALIFORNIA WINE AND VINEYARDS ARE IN TROUBLE The statistics speak volumes: California is America’s number-one wine producer, producing 81 percent of U.S. wine sales. There are approximately 637,000 acres planted to wine grapes, making the Golden State the fourth-largest wine producer in the world. Not surprisingly, those endless rows of vines generate amazingly diverse wine tasting experiences—including everything from high-end pairings in the Napa Valley to neighborly barn tastings in Sonoma County to cave tours and winemaker chats from Mendocino County to Temecula. California Insider / Story by Siyamak Khorrami: California is home to some of the world’s most renowned wine regions, including Napa Valley, Sonoma, and Lodi, making it a top global wine producer. However, the state’s wine industry is facing a significant slowdown in sales. Wineries are filled with unsold inventory and grape growers are struggling to find buyers for their grapes, even at steep discounts. https://lnkd.in/ekRYzjaw

Big wineries or small wineries: which produce better wines? The quality of wine isn't determined by the size of the winery but rather by factors like the winemaker's skill, philosophy of the winemaker, the quality of the grapes, and winemaking practices. Larger wineries may have more resources for consistent quality control, while smaller wineries can offer unique, artisanal products. Ultimately, both big and small wineries can produce excellent wines, depending on these factors.

Hi everyone - this week, let's travel further east of Napa and turn our attention to one of the smaller sub-AVAs: Wild Horse Valley. If you've never heard of Wild Horse Valley, it's?because there aren't a lot of wines made there. Sitting above the fog line, this is the coolest of all the AVAs and benefits from its proximity to San Pablo Bay. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay do well, and?tend to have higher acidity do to the higher elevation. The fruit is mainly sold to other wineries. Situated?on the edge of this AVA, Kenzo, is the closest winery that I can recommend - with a caveat. Pre-2020 wines from Kenzo were made by "the first lady of wine"?Heidi Barrett. Those wines were fantastic. Unfortunately, per Wine Searcher,?Heidi left Kenzo in 2022 over a dispute with the owners over releasing their 2020 reds, which she felt may have been impacted by smoke from?the Glass fire. She wanted to make it clear that she did not make those wines. Marc Nanes, was Heidi's assistant and?has taken over winemaking duties. Hopefully, he can continue their legacy of great wines. Insider Tip: If you see 2020 Napa reds on store shelves it's best to steer clear unless you can ensure the grapes were harvested before the Glass fire on Sept 27th, or they weren't subjected to?the smoke.? #wealthandwine #financeandvino #financialadvisor

The Endless Pursuit of Perfection in Winemaking ? For every idyllic moment you see of Team Di Costanzo amongst the vines or working in the winery, there are countless others filled with uncertainty and the nagging feeling we could have done better with a particular wine. ? ?But do you want to know the frustrating, shake-your-head-and-quietly-laugh-to-yourself thing about that? ? ?? It means we're doing it right. ? The best winemakers we know, the women and men whose work we admire so much, are all the same. We are never satisfied with our work. ? There's never a sense of being done, or having nailed a vintage or even one particular wine. Even many years after those grapes were picked and crushed into wine, often we still question what we might have done to make that wine better. ? It's downright torture! A relentless journey without a final destination. ?? ? While we don't revel in this torment, understand that when you buy from an independent, winemaker-owned winery like ours, you're tasting the fruits of our unwavering determination to improve constantly. It's a lifelong pursuit of perfection in every bottle.
