For those who have managed to avoid my endless in person updates — Amongst the boundless new projects and clients this year I also managed to devise, write, direct and present a multi-point interactive theatre show! It's these off-clock projects that keep the creative engine running smoothly (though also significantly more sleep deprived) Beyond the show's success. I think the thing I am most proud of is the team that Kate Speakman and I built to help us turn this idea into a reality. Kate came to me one day with a stack of interviews and a series of drafted scripts and said "Yo, creative person, help me make sense of this." Over 6 months, we pulled it from a loose message ("Your embarrassment is valid but not unique, feel the yucky feelings, then let it go") into a simple and clean premise: Your unresolved baggage is a bomb just waiting to go off... Go through airport customs. Then we found 18 people to turn the idea into a real, meaningful, walkable, choose your own journey... Complete with customs declarations forms. It's rare to find people who 'click' into gear so quickly and seamlessly — rarer still to find 18 of them. We managed to not only find talented people, but talented people who understood that this project's success relies on their talent and contribution. On reflection and in discussion with the team, I think that this culture is what made our hair-brained idea work. Each person was consistently made aware of their importance, their responsibility, their value in the room. We trusted each other, we held space for each other, we leant on each other, we held each other accountable. 'Ol mate Kate Speakman champions this attitude. She's the best egg, and a dear friend. Justice takes place everywhere, not just in the courts. After undergoing a subtle yet highly meaningful name change, the Center for Justice Innovation (formerly known as the Center for Court Innovation), approached us to expand their Visual Brand Identity to match their broad spectrum of areas of focus and action. The original VBI, also done by Bardo, was a comprehensive design system based on the word structure of the logotype, including a generative logic to create sub-brands on demand for the Center's ever-growing portfolio of programs and partners, where each would have its own color. We decided to keep the binary color logic of the previous VBI and design program, expanding the sets of color pairs to reflect the Center's vibrant and diverse nature. The challenge was that color pairs would have to be accessible (high contrast ratio), and the main brand (CJI) had to remain distinctively independent from the sub-programs. The result is a more dynamic and flexible representation of the Center itself and the many faces of Justice, and offers the CJI team a bigger and richer set of tools, multiplying the possibilities of application. When One Picture Tells Ten Thousand Stories! It’s often said that “a picture speaks a thousand words,” but through my journey in photography, I’ve come to believe that every picture speaks ten thousand different words to ten thousand different people. We each see, feel, and imagine unique stories within the same image. Take this photo, for example. Some will immediately recognise the familiar face of @Dermot Bannon and imagine a story, perhaps about the house in the background and it’s design or improvement. Others may ponder the history of the house, or who the other people in the image are. But very few will know the heartwarming story behind it. This house was generously donated to support individuals living with Cystic Fibrosis. In a beautiful act of community, JULIAN BENSON (CF Foundation), Dermot, along with countless Irish organisations, tradespeople and volunteers, came together to donate their time, skills and materials to transform it into ‘Tranquility House’, a sanctuary for those in need. Dr. Sinead Moore PhD and Dr. Lawrence Woods of The Spinery, also pictured here, kindly donated mattresses for this incredible project. Capital campaigns and painting projects have alot in common. Growing up, I would help my dad on alot of large-scale exterior house painting projects (house painting is actually how I saved money to buy a ring to propose to my wife!). My dad would always say, "over half the work in painting is the prep". This past weekend, I painted the climbing wall I've been building for my kids in our garage. And, true to my dad's proverbial wisdom, most of the work of the painting project was taping, masking, tarping, and assembling my tools. Once that was all done, the actual painting work was quick, easy, and resulted in beautiful coats and clean lines. The clean-up was easy and no mess was left behind. Prep and planning may not represent over 1/2 of the work of capital campaigns (more like 10-20%), but it's definitely how you get "beautiful coats" (fundraising goals acheived on time) and "clean lines" (effective messaging, clear processes, the right prospects and volunteers, etc.).
