This article made me pause and wonder how often I — and other smart, capable women I know — have consciously or subconsciously stepped back from opportunities for leadership or growth. It’s unsettling to think that, despite our qualifications and ambitions, the perceived risks of being seen as "aggressive," damaging relationships, or being unfairly blamed for failure often weigh heavily on us, especially as women and minorities. The pressure to navigate these unspoken barriers can be exhausting, and it makes me question how much untapped potential remains hidden in the workplace because of it. We talk so much about empowering women and minority leaders, but are we truly addressing the fears and risks they face? The path to real leadership equity isn't just about offering opportunities — it's about dismantling the systems that make those opportunities feel more like traps than stepping stones.

Today we will fall silent and pause for Remembrance Day, taking a moment to honour the courageous men and women who laid down their lives in the wars. Their legacy is woven into the fabric of our society—the freedoms we cherish, the values we uphold, and the unity we strive to maintain. Each year, as we wear our poppies, we don’t only honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice; we also recognise the depth of commitment, resilience, and selflessness they demonstrated. These qualities serve as a reminder of the power of legacy.?And this got me thinking about the legacies we will leave behind as leaders. As leaders, our actions and decisions impact not only our immediate teams but also the generations that follow. Legacy isn’t just about achievements or accolades; it’s about how we lead, the values we instil in others, and the culture we help create. In many ways, leadership is our chance to build something lasting. Every conversation, every bit of guidance, every act of compassion shapes the environment for those who will step into our roles. On this Remembrance Day, as we reflect on the legacy of those who have served, let’s also consider the legacy we’re creating as leaders. How are we inspiring others to lead with authenticity, empathy, and courage? Are we guiding our teams in a way that promotes not just performance but growth, resilience, and a sense of shared purpose? Let's not forget, leadership is a responsibility, and legacy is its gift. Our journey as leaders doesn’t have to end with a title or a retirement ceremony. It lives on in the people we touch, the trust we build, and the positive change we inspire. It's exciting that our team at Indigenous Innovation Ventures get to work alongside so many organisations who are purposefully committed to Reconciliation. A few years ago, I was invited to apply for a leadership accelerator that promised to redefine and disrupt leadership. I was surprised to discover a curriculum dominated by traditional Western leadership approaches. I was fortunate to be able to have a friendly and open conversation with the people running the accelerator about this gap, and they raised the issues that it's difficult to access robust and reputable resources about alternatives and that they believed the tools and approaches they were teaching worked. However, I believe that if we're serious about equitable representation, we must reform our leadership approaches to unlock the best that everyone has to offer. Many dominant models hinge upon conformity, convergent thinking and control and act to stifle the creativity, innovation and divergence that new voices and perspectives can bring. As Audre Lorde said, "the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house." Feminist leadership is a powerful, alternative model with a wealth of learning, research and real-life practice to support its use. There are no excuses anymore! Thanks to orgs like FAIR SHARE of Women Leaders and Heinrich-B?ll-Stiftung we now have free, in-depth resources to guide anyone who wants to adopt these approaches.
