This month, we observe National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, shining a light on the unique mental health struggles experienced by racial and ethnic minorities across the United States. Shockingly, in 2020, fewer than half of African Americans sought mental health care, reflecting similar trends among other racial groups. These disparities are exacerbated by barriers such as social stigma and inadequate access to insurance coverage. As a Black-owned business, we stand committed to promoting mental wellness and breaking down these barriers for all individuals in our community. #MentalHealth #BreakTheStigma #NationalMinorityMentalHealthAwarenessMonth

This is a big subject to talk about. I know that the culture around mental health is changing slowly, at least in this area. There is a huge stigma about seeking help, you can often be viewed as weak and it may cause conflicts of people wanting to work with you. Unfortunately, this leads to other forms of coping which may or may not be healthy. A lot of people may say that first responders knew what they were signing up for. This is true, but ask yourself if seeing the things they do on a daily basis is good for anyone? Even when you leave the job, the memories do not leave just because you did. The mental baggage and trauma follows you. Critical Incident Stress Debriefing is a great tool during big events, but what about the every day incidents that chip away at someone. You see the best and worse of society, this takes a toll on everyone. There is a brotherhood/sisterhood in public safety, this is helpful while you are on the job. What happens when you leave, when you loose those connections? Your work family becomes your family, the ones that you can talk to. Your blood family may not understand you and this can be problematic, you cannot open up to them. You do not want to unload the things you see on them in order to protect them, because that is what protectors do. The subject of mental health needs to be addressed and worked on. Organizations need to protect those that protect others. There needs to be more focus on keeping first responders safe so they may perform their jobs at the top of their game. #MentalHealth #PublicSafety #EndtheStigma #ProtecttheProtectors #WeNeedaChange

Finally an article that dares to name it. Whilst there are certain situations a company has to provide support for mental health and there is good providers to support this, i.e. nilo.health, a manager is not a therapist and a company is not a wellbeing hospital. To start a meeting with the question: how are you today is a good thing to do (but also only if you are authentic about it), whereas inviting employees to talk about their mental state every day is agenda setting into a wrong direction https://lnkd.in/d-nb7FnY
