Do you know someone looking for a rewarding, lifelong career? Consider construction! From the article: "According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of construction managers is projected to grow by 9% over the next decade, much faster than the average for all occupations. These professionals often earn a six-figure salary, with UNK graduates making an average of $70,000 in their first year on the job." BD Construction is built on the expertise of University of Nebraska at Kearney grads. That includes our most recent Construction Management hire, Kaden, shown in the middle of this photo. BD Construction is proud to support the UNK Construction Management Organization, and proud to have a staff filled with Loper alum!

I 100 percent agree with this post from Marc. I’ll put my experience against a degree any day. I see major companies cycling out their experienced staff for younger kids with degrees (cheaper rate) I think it’s great the younger generation puts forth the effort to get a construction management degree. That’s not the issue, the issue is companies thinking they will get the same results from people with no field experience. Cycling out the older heads who could mentor them into great PE PM SS etc is crazy. If you have to build in more OH cost on your project to have both then my opinion is to do so. The cut throat bid wars for BS state/federal jobs with low markups doesn’t do anybody no favors and actually just hampers the whole industry and holds everyone down. The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a low price is forgotten
The construction industry is going to lose a ton of experienced people. You would think 20, 30, or 40 years of experience would be a benefit. But in construction? All they see is the salary that that experience requires. And they settle for inexperienced (cheap) construction graduates. Who've never turned a wrench or run a project. In hopes that they'll save money on the front end. But end up paying for it on the back end when projects go south. So what are these experienced construction pros supposed to do? 1. Try and find a new job. 2. When they fail to find a job, they need to open their own shop. 3. Or leave the industry and find somewhere they can contribute. It's honestly a really sad situation to see. But this reality has become my mission. To help the little guy who's been disregarded or neglected. Despite bringing a ton of experience to the table. My goal is to help smaller contractors compete against the bigger guys. Because experience is experience. And with the right mindset, systems, processes, and leadership, they can leave their mark.

Is a university degree really worth the debt? Sure, the life experience might be fantastic for some, and the educational qualifications for others are essential for progression into their chosen careers. But for rest of us? Interested to know what the general consensus is within the construction industry. Is a university education necessary or generally looked for as a lever for progression into senior management? I don’t have a degree. I left school at 16 and worked my way up from site. Is this still possible? Is this still desirable? Is this being sold to school levers now as a viable way to make significant careers within construction? My concern has been for a while that everyone is being channeled towards further education as the (by far) most desirable path to take post school. But this leaves both the skills gap we all hear so much about, and fewer and fewer youngsters developing management skill based upon actual ‘on-the-tools’ construction experience. Thoughts?
