As the October 1 deadline approaches, existing renewable natural gas (RNG) facilities must re-register with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to continue generating Renewable Identification Number (RIN) credits under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) in 2025. The #USTreasury's proposed guidance on #cleanelectricity #taxcredits under the #InflationReductionAct has major implications for the #biogas and #RNG markets. The guidance requires a lifecycle #GHG analysis for biogas and RNG projects, which adds unnecessary hurdles not faced by other #cleanenergy sources. Additionally, the definition of "first productive use" could disqualify many existing projects, and the #Treasury's claim of insufficient verification mechanisms is disputed by industry experts. This uncertainty risks delaying investments and undermines Congressional intent to support all clean energy pathways. The American Biogas Council urges the Treasury to provide clear, supportive guidelines for biogas and RNG to ensure their role in our clean energy future.?

The EPA released updated renewable identification number (RIN) data on March 21st, 2024 which highlights the progressive growth in the renewable energy industry. Within the first two months of 2024, 3.92 billion RINs were generated under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program --- up ~11.9% from the same time last year in 2023. RNG projects typically qualify for cellulosic biofuel or D3 RIN credits. Despite challenges like severe flooding in Rock Valley, Iowa, Gevo's resilient team ensured minimal disruption and showcased remarkable operational efficiency. This milestone reflects continuous improvement and underscores the potential for significant growth. With ongoing efforts to secure a permanent CARB carbon intensity score of -350 gCO2e/MJ, Gevo is poised to double its non-GAAP adjusted EBITDA. A 16-year-old standard has been updated to allow for changes in the type of gas we will use to fuel our homes and workplaces. Newly revised into an interim standard to meet industry needs, NZS 5442(Int):2024 supports the safe blending of biomethane within the reticulated, or piped, gas network. The final and fully revised version of this standard, which should follow at a later date, is expected to additionally allow blending of hydrogen gas within the gas distribution network, an important step in New Zealand’s adaptation towards more renewable energy sources. Acting Standards Development Manager Nick Ascroft says: ‘While many consumers may be unaware of the type of gas running through their pipes, the changes NZS 5442(Int):2004 sets out have the potential to provide some clarity for installers and manufacturers in the industry and lead the way for more renewable energy sources.
