There has been a lot of immediate analysis on the tragedy that occurred in Butler, PA, yesterday where at least one civilian was killed, two more are in critical conditional, and a former U.S. president and current candidate was shot. One thing we all should know in threat assessment is that valid and reliable information and experience are the key to good assessments, intelligence, and site security. Threat assessment is about solid practices and great attention to even the smallest detail that can help save lives. “Quick and tidy” results whether in preparation or in evaluation is a poor stance. The only time such action should be quick is in the orchestration of a planned and understood response in the face of an emergency. There is going to be a lot to unpack here. But doing it now is like throwing your suitcase out of the plane mid-flight.

The final day of the Great Lakes Homeland Security Conference #GLHS had a couple of really great keynote presentation. The Google CyberCrime Investigation Group: Imminent Threats team provided an overview of their threat assessment methodology and reviewed several case studies. They are doing some great work behind the scenes with local, state, federal and international law enforcement to stop threats before they are carried out. CAPT (ret) Chris Cassidy, USN, gave the closing talk. Mr. Cassidy was an active duty Navy SEAL before being accepted to the astronaut program at NASA. He talked to us about assessing / managing risk, making effective decisions, and how to position yourself and your organization for success. #partnerships #homelandsecurity #riskmanagement
