This summer, I completed a cosmetic chemistry course from Society of Cosmetic Chemists HQ led by Perry Romanowski, focused on the formulation of cosmetics and personal care products. The course covered: - An introduction to the cosmetics industry, including basic skin and hair physiology, industry terminology, and key tools. - A detailed look at raw materials like surfactants, emollients, and preservatives, and different product forms such as emulsions and gels. - Product development techniques, from formulation and idea generation to testing for quality control and product claims. - The use of AI tools in formulation, reflecting the industry's move towards technology-driven innovation. Last month, a fascinating challenge landed on my lab bench. The task? To develop a clear, jelly-like cosmetic formulation that aligns with current market trends. It's these kinds of projects that really ignite my passion as a cosmetic chemist – blending creativity with scientific precision. In the world of gelling agents, there's a myriad of choices, each with its unique properties. After a thorough screening based on cost, availability, and feasibility within our project timeline,?it boiled down to three promising candidates: Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC, Natrosol? 250 HHR by Ashland), Xanthan Gum (Keltrol? CG-T by CP Kelco), and Sodium Polyacrylate (Lubrajel? Oil by Guardian). When it came to Xanthan Gum, a known player for its stability and viscosity, typically used at about 0.1% to 1%, I noticed something interesting. While it contributed to the desired viscosity, the texture had a slight tackiness to it. It was an intriguing observation - one of those small, yet significant details you only notice when you're hands-on in the lab. This slight tackiness, though not necessarily a deal-breaker, was a factor that nudged me towards the other candidates for a formulation that demanded perfect sensory appeal. Sodium Polyacrylate, used in concentrations of 1% to 5%, had great clarity and a pleasing texture but posed challenges in formulation due to its sensitivity to electrolytes. But the star of the show turned out to be Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC). Here's why HEC won me over: - It provided the perfect clarity, which was a non-negotiable for this project. - The texture was exactly what we were aiming for – smooth, elegant, and not at all sticky. - It's robust in formulation, showing less sensitivity to pH and electrolytes, which means more versatility and stability. This journey in the lab wasn't just about finding the right ingredient; it was a learning curve, a chance to push boundaries and collaborate with a team just as passionate about cosmetic science as I am. And it's these moments of discovery and innovation that make my role as a cosmetic chemist so rewarding. #CosmeticChemistry #Innovation #ProductDevelopment #HEC #CosmeticScience
