Partners in PROMISE's latest special education content article is out! Understanding and Advocating for Neurodivergent Learners Destiny Huff, a late-diagnosed autistic and ADHD mother of neurodivergent children and devoted military spouse, explores the importance of neurodiversity and neuroaffirming practices. Neurodiversity celebrates the variation in human cognitive functioning, highlighting how neurodivergent individuals—such as those who are autistic, dyslexic, or have ADHD—think differently from societal norms but are just as capable of thriving. In her article, Destiny delves into nine core principles of neuroaffirming practices crucial for supporting neurodivergent learners. Destiny's perspective is invaluable for anyone looking to advocate effectively for neurodivergent learners, especially in educational settings where support is often most needed. Counsellors, teachers, parents – my latest blog is a must read. In fact, I should say you SHOULD read it! “Shoulds” are unhelpful cognitive distortions that we all, at times, attach to our lives! Have you ever noticed how many rigid "shoulds" pop up for students when it comes to academics, social life, even their sense of self? "I should get straight A's." "I should have a huge friend group." "I should know exactly who I am by now." These perfectionistic thought patterns can place immense pressure on teens in particular, fuelling anxiety, self-criticism and an "all or nothing" mindset. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an effective approach to challenge these unhelpful "shoulds" and guide students toward a more balanced perspective, using: ?? Socratic questioning ?? Cognitive restructuring ?? Behavioural experiments Helping students reframe rigid "shoulds" into flexible, self-compassionate thoughts can unlock greater resilience and wellbeing. Let’s empower the teens in your life to navigate their “shoulds” in a healthier way! Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eW7KXkEX #cbt #counselling #adolescents

From improving school attendance to building confidence and handling friendship issues, this program empowers children to become their own therapists. ?? As a parent of neurodiverse children myself, I understand the challenges families face, and I’ve created an approach that truly works. ? Curious? Read the full blog to see how creativity is unlocking children's potential and helping them live happier, more confident lives. https://lnkd.in/e5aJF9uy #ChildDevelopment #AnxietySupport #Hypnotherapy #CreativeTherapy #ParentingTips #ChildConfidence #Neurodiversity

?? VOLUME 10: EARLY INTERVENTION We have so enjoyed exploring topics associated with SEN and Educational Psychology throughout the year and so for our last post in our upskilling series we looked into Early Intervention. ? What is it? ?? Across all of psychology, Early Intervention is a crucial approach that involves identifying and providing early support to individuals, particularly children, who are at risk or are experiencing developmental, behavioural, or mental health issues. ?? It aims to mitigate these potential difficulties and promote healthy development so that they can thrive academically and socially. ? What does it involve? ?? Early intervention involves a proactive approach, using tools and assessments to screen the children or young people to identify the difficulties. ?? It requires collaboration with various professionals, including teachers, speech and language therapists, and parents to create a comprehensive support plan. ?? It also can involve continuous monitoring of the child’s progress to ensure the intervention is effective as well as transition support; helping them prepare for the social and academic demands of school or their next educational setting. ? The importance of Early Intervention ?? It supports young people to reach their full potential through addressing the issues early. ?? It improves mental health, helping the children develop resilience and coping skills. ?? It enhances children’s school readiness. ?? It can help equip families with resources and strategies they need to support their young person’s development and foster a positive home environment. We hope you enjoyed our series, and we wish all connections a Merry Christmas ?? ?? Millie Goy Emma Vasey Megan Taylor-Haywood #EarlyIntervention #EP

Why Every Child Should Learn Psychology at School Addressing common school issues like bullying, addictions, violent games, and shootings is critical to build a healthy society. Self-awareness is foundational, and instilling it at the school level through psychological education can create a strong baseline for mental health and personal development. By integrating psychological education into the school curriculum, we can equip children with the tools to understand themselves and navigate life more effectively. Here’s why this approach is so impactful compared to later "repairs" like meditation or therapy that happens later in life. The solution lies in fostering social bonding, emotional awareness, and mutual support through structured activities, such as: 1. Awareness about mental health issues Children ought to know what ADHD and Autism is. They also have to understand the mental health consequences of addiction and how people end up homeless, fearful, angry and in jails. 2. Peer Influence for Good: Empower students to discourage harmful behaviors like reporting peddlers at the earliest and addressing issues like ADHD and clan formations by promoting bonding beyond divisive factors. 3. Building Social Bonds: Encourage sharing personal experiences to create understanding and empathy. Promote teamwork and friendship through collaborative activities. 4. Appreciation and Motivation: Organize group exercises where students appreciate and praise each other. Teach mindfulness of emotions, helping students recognize and respect their own and others' feelings. Such initiatives create a supportive environment that nurtures emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and a sense of belonging, steering students toward healthier choices and relationships. Psychological education lays a proactive foundation for lifelong mental well-being, while meditation and other interventions can supplement this when needed. By addressing self-awareness and emotional skills at the root level, we empower children to grow into resilient, emotionally intelligent adults, reducing the need for repair-focused fixes later. #Education #Psychology

Let's talk Executive Functioning. As educators do we know how how this can affect our students in our setting? Executive function or executive skills is derived from literature around Neuroscience and refers to brain-based skills to execute and perform tasks. The executive system involves the prefrontal cortex, ganglia and thalamus. It is a cognitive process that is needed to plan and direct activities and regulate behaviour. Based on Dawson and Guare's model, it explores how it affects 11 areas: ?Response Inhibition ?Working memory ?Emotional control ?Sustained attention ?Task initiation ?Planning/prioritisation ?Organisation ?Time management ?Goal-directed persistence ?Flexibility ?Metacognition? -Dawson and Guare (2004, 2009) So in what areas of SEND may we see deficits in executive functioning? Frequently it is seen in conditions such as some of the following: -ADHD -ASC -Learning and Language Disabilities -Down Syndrome -Cerebral Palsy -Dyslexia Want to know more? The therapeutic relationship with autistic clients often requires us to question our fundamental assumptions about communication, connection, and change. Our upcoming certificate programme, Certificate Course ‘Working Therapeutically With Autistic Adults’ starting March 2025, offers a deep dive into creating genuinely therapeutic spaces and meaningful therapeutic outcomes for autistic adults. This course spans the personal, interpersonal, social, and political domains of autistic experience. We explore topics that clients want to address in therapy, including internalised ableism, positive autistic identity, authentic and safe relationships, realistic and optimistic visions of a future, energy management and crisis prevention, workplace environments, relationships, and choices. The programme is deliberately structured to allow for both theoretical understanding and practical application, with extra supervision clinical discsussion group sessions providing space for case discussion, exploration, and reflection. As autistic psychotherapists ourselves (each with 25 years experience), we bring both professional expertise and personal insight to the training topics and the group discussions. The course is suitable for counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists, and coahes from all modalities, recognising that there isn't only one style of therapy that is meaningful and useful with autistic clients. Instead, we focus on developing a deeper understanding of autistic experiences and ways of being, allowing you to integrate this knowledge with your existing therapeutic framework. You can see details of the course contents, dates, fees, and enrollment criteria here https://lnkd.in/eFvCyAkP
