Rare Breed Nurse,COVID19 Recovery Fellow-WHO, ICN-Global Nursing Leadership Institute Alumni, IND Award winner 2022
?? Why Choose Nursing? Reflecting Ahead of Nurses Week ?? Over the past few weeks, I've had the profound privilege of speaking with several BSc. Nurses as they awaited their internship postings. Our conversations have been eye-opening, illuminating both the passion that drives individuals to this noble profession and the stark challenges they face. In 2020, amidst the global crisis, the world stood together, clapping for our healthcare heroes. Fast forward to 2024, and sadly, the enthusiasm seems to have dimmed, with government budget allocations falling short of supporting nurse interns. Despite this, every nurse I spoke with carried a spark—an unwavering commitment to care that transcends the hurdles of poor remuneration, professional degradation, and a lack of governmental appreciation. As Nurses Week approaches this May, it's crucial to remember why so many choose this path: Impact - Nurses make a life-saving impact daily, providing care that extends beyond just medical needs. Resilience - Facing systemic challenges, nurses continually advocate for their patients and their profession. Compassion - At the heart of nursing is a profound compassion for human life and well-being. Choosing nursing isn't just a career decision; it's a call to make a difference, even when it’s hard. Let's use Nurses Week to not only celebrate nurses but to rekindle the support they deserve. Let's not just clap; let’s act. ?? #NursesWeek #HealthcareHeroes #SupportNurses MARY MUTHONI MURIUKI, CBS, HSC.

If you are a new nurse graduate…if you are a more experienced nurse…we are in this together… Starting your nursing career is an exciting adventure filled with new challenges and opportunities. But it's natural to feel a little overwhelmed…or very overwhelmed! Wouldn't it be amazing to have a peek into the future and learn from those who've paved the way? Wouldn't it be amazing to have a true mentorship - dare I say apprentice-ship model in place for all new nurse graduates? While that is a wonderful and helpful notion, it is not offered in many workplaces, given the context of the pressure-like environments. Years ago, I heard a term that described children being born 'cable ready' - they are born with this innate sense of embracing technology. For the most part, this is the expectation of new grads - they are expected to appear 'cable ready' for clinical practice. While it is realistic to expect new grads to have met the entry standards, I think sometimes there are unrealistic expectations placed on them and the apprenticeship model that is so sadly missing now in clinical practice to support them. New grads: What are those burning questions in your mind as you start your first set of shifts? Put one or two questions here … for the experienced nurses who read this post, take a moment to answer a question/comment. While your response is your experience, your perspective may support a new nurse beginning her journey. By learning from each other, we build resilience and a sense of well-being and ensure that all nurses, new and experienced, grow and flourish in this incredible profession. #NewGradNurses #NurseMentorship #NursingCommunity

This International Nurses Day, let's shine a well-deserved spotlight on the heroes of healthcare—the nurses who tirelessly dedicate themselves to the well-being of others. Did you know that despite the critical demand for RNs and APRNs, nursing school enrollment isn't keeping pace? Enrollment in entry-level baccalaureate programs has increased, but drops in PhD and master's nursing programs are raising concerns about meeting future nursing service demands. A shortage of nursing school faculty compounds the issue. In 2021, over 91,000 qualified applications were turned away due to insufficient faculty and resources. Additionally, a significant portion of the nursing workforce is nearing retirement age, signaling a potential crisis in the years ahead. At Maryland Apprenticeship Connector (MAC), we're working to help individuals entering the nursing industry through apprenticeship programs. Let's recognize the dedication, resilience, and compassion of the nurses that have decided to choose this career path. They are the heart of healthcare, and their unwavering commitment deserves our deepest gratitude.

The job outlook for NICU nursing is expected to grow from 45% from 2019-2029.?The steps to becoming a nurse is a lot of hard work and it can be very competitive when it comes to nursing programs. However, once all of your schooling is done landing an actual job at hospitals isn't too hard. That is because many types of nurses are in high demand right now so hospitals are open and willing to take applications. From research there are about 83 NICU jobs in Salt Lake City which is where I will be moving to for college. When it comes to money, the median salary for a NICU nurse in Utah is about $88,300 but can range from $70,000-$160,000. I also found that Wisconsin pays their NICU nurses the highest salary in America. The payment ranges from $97,000-$184,000 a year. Overall I think I would still stay in Utah to pursue my career in nursing because their pay is fairly well and I hear the nurses here are very good and well rounded. #nebointerns?#utahcteinternships?#internships?#shhsinterns

The Purpose Nurse???|| RN|| RM|| Personal development enthusiast||SDG 3 advocate|| BICAP campus ambassador
One lesson I've learnt so far on my journey as a student nurse is to be immune to insults from senior colleagues or staff nurses. I remember a particular day during one of my clinicals, a staff nurse asked me to administer a particular medication which I wasn't conversant with, to a patient. I immediately indicated that I didn't know which medication it was and that I needed assistance in identifying it. Trust me when I say, I heard a ton full of insults that day and they really stung. However, she later on helped me, and ever since that day, I not only can identify the medication, but also can tell it's function, dosage and all that pertains to it. Yes, it's good to be knowledgeable about whatever your duty is and entails. However, remember you don't build a castle in a day. Learning is a process, be open to it and follow through diligently. No gree for unnecessary pressure?! What salient lessons have you learnt so far on your academic journey as a student or an intern? Share them in the comment section below??, let's learn and grow. #growth #intentionality
