The battle for engagement is heating up: The Walt Disney Company's two main streamers in the US (Disney+ and Hulu), together drive as many viewing hours per sub per month as Netflix. On Sunday, we highlighted the strong correlation between engagement and churn, a multi-billion-dollar opportunity for streamers. Today, the The Wall Street Journal's Robbie Whelan and Jessica Toonkel published a great story on the steps Disney's DTC services are taking to become "as addictive as Netflix" (link below). For our latest Streamonomics study (in partnership with Antenna) we had estimated hours watched per sub per month for the major US streamers over the last year and a half. While Netflix standalone does lead in this metric, our data suggests Disney's efforts to combine both services could level the playing field. Most people don't love being advertised to, but they sure love being entertained. So, we created a piece of entertainment. * Believe in a smart audience. We're not afraid of people not getting everything. We packed the film with nuggets for those who know while sparking curiosity in everyone who doesn't. * Believe in the product. We're not afraid to inspire you to buy a piece of cardboard as the perfect Christmas present. Knowing full well that this piece of cardboard opens a whole world of entertainment. Alice in Wonderland, this is not. The crackdown on password sharing may have been notable when Netflix did it in 2023 after years of a 'let bygones be bygones' attitude. But as you knew it would, it's sparking others like Disney to do the same for its streaming services. More importantly, it highlights the increasingly cutthroat Evil Queen streaming business, where even Snow White would struggle to stem losses and turn a profit. Like Netflix, Disney discovered that the Beauty of the streaming business is a Beast when it comes to profitability, which is why users will soon pay for the privilege of sharing passwords. It's part of a grander strategy to drive more subscribers towards the combined Disney Plus and Hulu app that was launched last month. If you're considering pulling a Pinocchio with workarounds using the Hulu app, think again. Disney is working on unifying identities on Hulu, ESPN and Disney+ and your cable box, which will undoubtedly nip password sharing in the bud. Having said all that, you don't need One Hundred and One Dalmatians to bark the real reason behind the move. Disney is hot and heavy on achieving profitability for its streaming services soon, and the password sharing crackdown will go a long way towards that. Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ are putting the brakes on password sharing starting in March! If you've been sharing your Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN+ login outside your household, that’s about to come to an end! The House of Mouse is tightening the reins on account sharing, with the updated user agreements now carrying stricter language about the consequences. Violators could have their accounts limited or terminated. Enforcement will begin on March 14, according to an email sent to Hulu subscribers. So, why the sudden crackdown? ?? Disney CEO Bob Iger sees this strategic move as a prime opportunity to fuel business growth, eyeing Netflix's success in reeling in 13 million new subscribers post-crackdown. Modern Marketing now includes CGI videos. They are marketing "deep fake" video ads. A new form of disruptive digital marketing. It is designed to cause a stir and get people talking. But the bigger issue is that they often look so real that most people can not discern that they are fake. I love disruptive marketing, but I loath deceptive marketing.
